One wave.
Up.
Another.
Up.

Then the seventh.
And I don’t.
Not yet.

A little longer than I should.
A little longer than this body knows how.

The sea grows strangely familiar.
As if it’s been waiting for me.

As if somewhere beneath the surface,
there is a life where lungs were never necessary,
where girls grow tails instead of fears,
where silence is a mother tongue.

For a fleeting moment
I forget which world I belong to.

The last of my breath leaves.
Time dissolves.

Then instinct

I break the surface

gasping

born again.

And somewhere between staying and returning
I wonder
if every soul,
at least once,
mistakes home

for forever.
