A dedication to my 35th.🥂

“…… something tried to steal my destiny. My pure heart, my mind, my body, my family, and my birthright. Whatever it was, I knew I served one thing, and that one thing lives inside of me & when God takes the wheel, anything in the way will be destroyed.

I’ve been to places no one saw, forced myself to.
Put myself in places no one could reach me, forced myself to.
And then took myself to places so deep within myself I didn’t know if light even existed there.

Life to me was,
blood to blood..
seventeen blood vessels shattered in my neck.
Six months later, buried my mother after cancer came for her a second time.
Three months after, my ex-husband faced a manslaughter conviction and was given a ten year sentence.

I was sliced in half.
I went to sleep a wide-eyed, soft-hearted, stay-at-home mom…
and woke up in a place so dark, so confusing, so gut-wrenching, so lonely, I questioned God for the 1st time ever.
I didn’t even recognize my own being. And the worst part of it all, was there was no one to grab my hand. No one is coming to save you Kanaya.

It’s scary knowing no one was coming to save me, but unimaginably scary knowing I knew that, and had two kids who were depending on me to save them. They were ripped in half. Witnessed things they shouldn’t have had to. Lost trust, lost a grandmother, a grandfather, & a father in every sense but breath.

So I did the only thing I could:
I placed my trauma in Gods hands. Cuz BABBBBBYYYYYY. I’m not suppose to be in my right mind and for damn sure had to fight a hell of a fight to see the light at the end of my tunnel.

So chapter thirty-five?
This shit was not given!
I earned it. My kids earned it.

And I’m so proud. I had plenty ditches dug for me, and at times I thought I would be buried. And I was. But under undefeated soil that was fertilized by the most high to grow my purpose.

Art has always been my love, my language, my way of turning emotion into something you can see, feel, and wear. And a creative is really just who I am.

From the sewing machine to the set, from the casting rooms to the venues where the vision comes together, I’ve learned to see a fashion show from every side.

That’s what I’m bringing to the Detroit Met Gala: a designer’s hands, a model’s eye, a creative director’s vision, and a mama’s heart for the next generation.

The Met Gala has always been something my daughter @aili_in_town and I shared, so this one sits close to home.

I am excited to work alongside @indie.fash and thee entire @thedetgala team to make sure we give the city the experience it deserves.

Detroit come out, celebrate, and enjoy the night with us.

Her name is Patience and it describes her spirit perfectly. Patience has a gift for discovering New York’s hidden gems and capturing the beauty most people walk right past. If you’re ever in Manhattan, book a session with her and prepare to see the city differently.

Born in Liberia, a country with deep historical ties to free formerly enslaved Black Americans, she shared a powerful lesson with me about her lineage and the history she carries through her lens. Since coming to America, New York has been the only place she has known.

After working together on several shoots, @indie.fash and I decided it was time to bring her beyond the city, introduce her to the team, and give you all the opportunity to meet her when we return for New York Fashion Week in February.

This is what culture and climate looks like: honoring where people come from, recognizing what they carry, and creating room for their gifts to travel.
