This weekend at the Eastern Region Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was more than a gathering, it was a reminder.

I reconnected with mentors and brothers I hadn’t seen in years. Men who sharpened me, challenged me, and helped shape the path I walk today.

And somewhere in all of that, my excitement was reignited.

Alpha is not just history, it is living, breathing impact. In our communities. In our classrooms. In our boardrooms. Across the world.

This weekend reminded me that what we carry is bigger than us, and the work ahead is still calling. by @kang_chase

Chase Patterson @kang_chase
— Beechview, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

His story began at St. Clair Hospital in Mt. Lebanon. He was raised in Beechview, surrounded by a big extended family, loving parents, devoted grandparents, and more cousins than he could count. A second-generation Black family in a blue-collar neighborhood. He carries deep pride in being a Beechview kid.

The experience that shaped him most was his parents’ divorce. He doesn’t remember them being together, but he feels the absence of what should have been shared moments with his father. That missing time became a quiet driver in his life. It is why he shows up so fully for his own sons. Why presence matters to him. Why he refuses to miss the moments he once lost.

Today, he spends his life being a father. Not only to his children, but to the children he serves through his work. His purpose is rooted in creating access for historically disadvantaged and forgotten kids. Giving opportunity where geography, history, and systemic barriers have denied it. He believes change starts by meeting children where they are and refusing to let circumstance define their ceiling.

What matters most to him now is simple. That his children are proud of him as their father.

He is working toward becoming healthier, more disciplined, and more effective as a leader. He is committed to helping rebuild the Larimer community, using his school as an anchor for transformation. He sees himself as a builder of change. A developer of people and possibility.

What most people don’t see is how deeply he feels everything. He cries more than anyone would expect. His mind is constantly turning over what is broken, why it is broken, and why it still has not been fixed. And beneath all of it, he quietly wrestles with the fear of losing the people he loves most.

He carries that weight forward. And turns it into purpose. taken in The Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School by @kang_chase
