During my residency in Niigata, I walked through the city, the sand dunes, the pine forest, and along the sea.

In the sharp winter air, I felt alone.
At the same time, there was a quiet comfort within me.
Perhaps this feeling belongs to Niigata in this season.

Snow crunching under my feet.
Wind blowing in from the Sea of Japan.
Hail tapping against the window.

Listening carefully, like a stone,
the colors of Niigata slowly entered my body.

Closed shutters along the arcades.
A wide, open sea.
An empty road.
A room where I sit alone.

Winter in Niigata offered many moments of solitude.
And yet, beyond each door, there were encounters —
with landscapes, with people, with stones.

In this open studio, I presented works combining video, poetry, and stone objects, born from these encounters.

In the midst of a restless world,
I wished to open a space for care, play, and tenderness.

With deep gratitude to everyone in Niigata who made this possible.

Tenderness of the Stones in Niigata, Japan

My best friend @tsumnder made beautiful photographs and video.

Thanks for @aika.kka , @slopehouse.akiha for guiding me, driving me, and connecting me with local people—and for the warm welcome to your beautiful AIR, @slopehouse.akiha

It’s super beautiful and nice AIR and if you want to work, creation or research with locals in Niigata, I recommend to contact with them.

I’m now in Niigata Japan for an artist in residency at @yuiport_jp
Surrounded by the Japanese ocean and its cold, rough weather, I find that the snow somehow makes me happy.
There is beautiful nature here, along with a nostalgic old town.

I am very grateful to be here and to share Tenderness of the Stones with people in Japan.
I also discovered that my family name originates from Niigata.

It feels as if the stones themselves called me to be here.

CANAPÉ’S FIRST BIRTHDAY WEEKEND
21 & 22/02 – ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT ART & PERFORMANCE

Kaori Ishiguro (she/her – @kaorishiguro) &
Alex Schuurbiers (she/her – @hetschuur)
Kaori Ishiguro (JP) is a dancer and performer based in Antwerp. She is currently dedicated to creating works across various media. Her practice lies within performance art, exploring the boundaries between self and others through bodily and sensory experience. Rather than direct audience interaction, she creates shared moments that invite presence, awareness and a sense of interconnectedness.

Alex Schuurbiers (NL/BE) is an audiovisual artist working predominantly with analogue media. Her practice focuses on trance-like, non-hierarchical narrative structures related to the subconscious, addressing themes such as heimat, maternal lineage, trauma and resilience. She researches memory and its representation in film-based works, as well as ecological developing methods and the effects of organic matter on celluloid.

Tenderness of the Stones is a poetic, immersive project exploring solitude as a means to reconnect with ourselves and others. Through silent encounters with stones—touch, gesture and presence—the work invites visitors into deep sensory listening and reflection.
The installation combines video, sound, sculpture, performance and workshops, offering a space of care, play and tenderness in a fast-moving world.

Martha Dewit (she/her – @martha_dewit) — performing 21/02
Martha Dewit is currently in her final year of the master’s program Danse et pratiques chorégraphiques at INSAS / La Cambre / Charleroi Danse. Moving between the roles of dramaturge, choreographer and dancer, she enjoys both supporting the projects of others and shaping her own work. In her personal practice, she searches for the tideline where improvisation and composition meet.

She will share a work in progress: a solo developed as part of her graduation project. Working with structured improvisation, each dance becomes both familiar and unknown.
