Hidden beneath Madison Avenue, behind an unassuming staircase, sits one of the Upper East Side’s most discreet dining rooms.

@kappomasanyc is the product of a decades-long friendship between legendary Japanese @chefmasanyc and art-world titan Larry Gagosian — bringing together two worlds that, on the Upper East Side, feel destined to meet: exceptional food and exceptional art.

Chef Masa is behind his namesake Masa at Columbus Circle, one of New York’s most celebrated Japanese dining experiences. Kappo Masa takes that same obsession with precision, ingredients and technique and places it in an entirely different setting — tucked below @gagosian Madison Avenue address, with omakase, tasting menus and an expansive à la carte menu.

And the location could hardly be more Upper East Side if it tried.

Practically triangulated between The Mark, The Carlyle and The Surrey, Kappo Masa sits at the center of one of Manhattan’s most rarefied few blocks. It’s the kind of dining room that quietly draws collectors, art-world power players, longtime regulars and New York’s movers and shakers — without ever needing to announce itself.

And then there’s the art.

Picasso. Warhol. Twombly. Lichtenstein.

Dinner here quite literally doubles as a gallery visit. Works from the Gagosian world have lined the walls — and yes, they’re the real thing. Guests have reportedly mistaken pieces for reproductions, only to learn they were sitting beside an original.

Even the room itself is a study in design. The subterranean space, once home to a bank vault, is wrapped in Japanese materials including porous Oya stone, chosen for its sculptural beauty and the way it softens sound.

The result feels less like a traditional restaurant and more like being let into a private corner of the Upper East Side — where world-class Japanese food, museum-worthy art and some of New York’s most interesting people meet downstairs.

Perhaps the most Upper East Side part of all? You could walk past it every day and never know what was hiding beneath you.
