‘Sabbatical’

Join us for an exclusive one-night-only screening of @karabolediga’s feature debut Sabbatical on Thursday, 28 August 2025 for the second edition of our partnership with @recognitionbxl.

With screenwriter and director Karabo Lediga, lead Mona Monyane, producer Tamsin Andersson, cinematographer Motheo Moeng, and production designer Ntokozo Kunene in-person for a Q&A after the screening.

Written and directed by Karabo Lediga, and starring Mona Monyane, Clementine Mosimane, Sabbatical premiered at this year’s edition of @iffr.

When a successful investment banker unexpectedly returns to her childhood home after an illicit work incident, her overbearing and doting mother is wary of her sudden arrival. A tragic and comical culture clash of a mother and daughter forced to get to know each other again.

Rest in Peace to the giant Ntate Seputla Sebogodi. I grew up watching him, thanks to Nkwešeng’s legendary antics and many others. I was so fortunate that he agreed to work on Sabbatical. I was pretty sold on him but he had sent an excellent audition tape (most declined to). He did say “I’m here because I love your brother.” 🥹. He was such a pleasure to work with - generous, funny, patient and a consummate professional. His gentle approach to the role of Gabriel was such a thrill! Over and above his immense talent, I enjoyed the Pheli vibes and banter! My deepest condolences to his loved ones. This is such a massive loss. He’s gone way too soon. ❤️❤️❤️ by @karabolediga

Day 1 of Basha Uhuru Creative Week invites audiences into an exploration of the stories, memories, and struggles that have shaped South Africa’s ongoing journey toward freedom. Through a compelling programme of film screenings, archival storytelling, and artistic expression, the day interrogates themes of identity, resistance, womanhood, memory, land, and queer liberation.

Bringing together filmmakers, artists, cultural practitioners, and audiences, the programme asks an urgent question: How is freedom remembered, documented, embodied, and passed on across generations? Through intimate personal narratives and collective histories, these works explore the ways in which memory itself becomes a site of liberation, challenging erasure, reclaiming narratives, and imagining new futures.

This curation creates a space for reflection, remembrance, dialogue, and a deeper engagement with the cultural archives that continue to inform our present and shape our future.
