Jewel of the Rainforest! 🌿A male Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher from the rainforests of the Western Ghats, Maharashtra.Every monsoon, oriental dwarf kingfishers; the most colourful kingfisher species in the world, arrive into the Western Ghats to breed. The Monsoon Love 🌧️🐸Sharing a few images of Indian Bullfrogs in breeding, including single individuals, a pair in amplexus, and males with their vocal sacs.With the arrival of the monsoon in India, the breeding season begins for many reptiles and amphibians. One such species is the Indian Bullfrog.Despite being a common species in India, during the breeding season, the males transform into bright yellow, with vibrant blue vocal sacs (as seen in the third image). They fiercely compete with one another for the best calling spots and to attract the attention of females. Flamingo City 🦩Sharing a few images of Lesser flamingos, including their courtship displays and some within the urban landscape of Mumbai city.Every year, from December to May, thousands of Lesser flamingos and a smaller number of Greater flamingos migrate to Mumbai (from the Rann of Kutch). This year, the migration was slightly delayed, possibly due to climate change or the extended monsoon of 2025, which lasted until mid-November.Nevertheless, they finally arrived in their beautiful breeding plumage and colours, something I wanted to witness and, of course, photograph for a very long time. It's Moth Week!! 🦋A beautiful Sri Lankan Atlas Moth (the world's 2nd largest moth by wingspan) that we came across while herping in the northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra.While looking for reptiles on a busy road, we came across this Atlas Moth. It was gently picked up and safely released onto a nearby plant.These moths use remarkable wing camouflage, with patterns that resemble two cobra heads to deter potential predators. Adult moths do not feed; they survive on the energy stored during their larval stage and live for only around 1–2 weeks. The Opportunist! 🦎A male Roux's Forest Lizard trying to mate with an already gravid female lizard.During a nature trail, I photographed this male Roux's Forest Lizard attempting to mate with a gravid (egg-carrying) female.Although the female was already carrying eggs, the male continued his courtship attempts. This behaviour is believed to occur because males cannot always recognize whether a female is already gravid. During the breeding season, hormones fuel these behaviours. World of Flamboyance 🦩Wide-angle shots of flamingos, both these images were taken at different times of the day and on different days this season.Before I post the last set of flamingo photographs, here’s how I wanted to show you their world in wide angle. Unfortunately, my 50mm lens couldn’t fully do justice to what I witnessed through my own eyes. Connecting the world beyond borders 🕊️On this World migratory bird day, sharing images of a few migratory visitors that we've (with @_fidgetywren_ & @__sidjain__ ) been fortunate to photograph over the years.Every year, hundreds of birds migrate to India from different parts of the world some escaping harsh summer, while many arrive here to spend the winter season. From a tiny Tibetan sand plover to the longest distance - migratory birds in the world, the Amur falcon, each one travels distances we can only imagine and unifies several countries and continents along the way.In between all the ongoing wars, terrorism, and negativity around the world, bird migration reminds us that we are all connected beyond borders. A Place Called 'Home' 🌳This winter, I got the chance to document a few bird species like Indian Grey hornbill, Red breasted parakeet, Spotted owlet, and Indian ringed necked parakeet around their nesting homes here in Mumbai. What I found interesting was where these homes are. In a city that’s constantly growing and changing, where trees are being cut for construction, these birds are still adapting and finding space to live. For us, it’s just a tree. But for them, it’s home a place where they feel safe and raise their young.It’s a simple reminder that we share this space with them, and protecting these trees matters for them and for us too. Away From Home! 🦩A Lone juvenile greater flamingo with a mixed flock of waders on the beach.Last year in November, @wildlife_yash and I went to Alibag, Maharashtra to photograph waders (birds that live and feed along the shore). While doing so, we came across an unusual sight, a juvenile flamingo on a sandy beach. I call it unusual because flamingos are mostly seen feeding in mangroves or similar wetland habitats.There could be a few reasons why this individual was here: - First, it might have gotten separated from its flock and lost its way while moving between habitats. - Second, it could have been chased away by a predator like a Brahminy Kite or Black Kite, which are commonly seen around coastal areas. - Lastly, sometimes a lone individual may be slightly weak, dehydrated, or recovering from a minor injury, which can lead it to isolate itself from the flock.But it was a great sight and obviously a good documentation for data. Wildlife - Shot on Phone When I started photography back in 2018–19, every photographer I met told me, “The best camera is the one you have in your pocket” (your phone). At that time, I didn’t believe it at all how could a mobile phone shoot a good picture? But I was wrong.I started using my phone to photograph random subjects be it insects, flowers, or the sky. Over time, I realized that it’s all about perspective and the vision you want to show through your photos, not the gear or the clarity of the image.Till the end of 2019, I used my phone as my primary camera. In 2020, I bought myself a DSLR, but that didn’t stop me from making photographs with my phone. Even now, despite having a high-end mirrorless body, I still love making pictures with my mobile because 'the best camera is the one you have in your pocket.'Sharing with you some of my favourite images I've shot with my mobile phone.
