Don’t knock me for my dormancy
Icarus taught me well
As did the moths
Or so I thought

In the summer I burn like the agave turned sienna
And the salt drips down my arms like
resin encrusting creosote
We await the rain

But,
The Sun is our temptress
Craving her kiss, yet accepting a slap
And the water escapes me for a moment
Through ducts of aching eyes
Blinded by desire for succulence
Even in scorching brilliance

I see the plaster peeling from adobe
The asphalt slumping and craggy
I hear it loud and clear
Cicadas screaming at me
I walk home at last
And await the rain

It’s not easy to accept the absence of a presence so pure and true
It’s impossible.
Because it does still live inside of you
An ember of what once was a blinding light
Often turns your mind into soot
The capability you once had to venture out into old growth forests without leaving your backyard
That allowed you to cry without shame
It turns into the ability to imagine that you are unworthy or incapable
Of imaging that you! through all your intricacies and trillions of nerves and blood cells working through your body!
Through the movement of your toes to your eyebrows and the intake of thousands of breaths in a days work!
That you aren’t worthy of delight
That curiosity is perilous
That your creativity should be channeled into monetary gains
There are all these forces telling you to grow tf up

inside me there’s a horse named buttercup with a shiny peanut butter coat that accompanied me through canyons and valleys and leapt with me through the air into piles of dead leaves
and that cheered me on through every move across the country and every new interaction that haunted me
But now
There’s no horse to hide behind
Only the inclination that she still guides me
Through child-like wonder
That the little shining fleck of gold at my center doesn’t always have to feel so heavy
That it can can shift and transform inside me
To tell me that I am safe here
safe to imagine a better world
And hunger for change even when it hurts

we often contradict what it means to be alive
Borders and division corral us into submission
But buttercup says f*ck that.
And I guess I’ll just have to learn to listen. by @kareenbeean
