Meeker Slough in Richmond, CA. It was a sunny day, I forgot my umbrella, also my water containers so improvised with a plastic bag. The wind came up and the paint dried too quickly. Maybe I should have given up! by @karen_fiene

Adventure with gouache! I recently took an excellent class with Danny Folkman in Point Reyes. He is such a fine artist and great teacher, I highly recommend checking his work and workshops out. dannnyfolkman.com or dannyfolkmanart on IG.
This was my first time painting on crescent board so it was a learning experience. Gouache is sort of the opposite of watercolor in terms of transparency and how colors dry. It’s a challenge to try a new medium but Danny made the exploration a lot of fun. by @karen_fiene

Something completely different! I don’t usually do still life subjects so it was a treat to hang with painting pals Norm, Karyn and Helen a few weeks ago on an overcast morning. The pale jugs and pale sky made for a high key painting. Coincidentally I had just been reading a book about Giorgio Morandi, pure genius! by @karen_fiene

It’s rose season! Actually I started this last May Ikat the Berkeley Rose Garden and just now decided to finish it. I took painter friend Cleo Vilett’s advice to paint another layer over the first wash to create the shapes of roses and leaves in the background. by @karen_fiene

Tassajara Creek crossing on the way to The Narrows. I started this last summer while at a writing workshop at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in the Carmel Valley. The light on the water on that hot day was beyond beautiful. I’m so saddened to hear of the recent fire at the Zendo reducing it to ashes. It’s a reminder that all things are ephemeral. by @karen_fiene

I love trying to capture the late afternoon sun on the bay. Everything goes into silhouette and it’s just shapes and light. This was from a friend’s property off of Grizzly Peak a few weeks ago with painter friends and a dog named Basil. Half sized sheet, 15x22. by @karen_fiene

The C&H Sugar factory in Crockett tells a story of American manufacturing situated on a major waterway and connected by rail. It was a freezing morning in Jan ‘25, made easier with a half dozen painting friends urging one another on. Don’t usually do such detailed architecture, it’s too much work! by @karen_fiene

I had the opportunity to paint at Yanci Ranch outside Winters as part of the Yolo Arts program. Art buddies Helen Kang, Cathy Xu, Norm Bonney, Jamie Morgan and Cleo Vilette made some lovely paintings.The sound track was calves getting branded and castrated. Ouch! by @karen_fiene

After traversing the east coast of New Zealand we headed south to Fijorland National Park, took a boat across Lake Manapouri, took a 2 hour bus ride down NZ’s steepest road, and then spent the night on The Wanderer in Doubtful Sound. The glacial melt creates an 8’ layer of fresh water on the salty Tasman Sea within the long fingers of the sound allowing freshwater species to dwell there. Along the west coast we climbed to the base of the Rob Roy glacier. At Fox Glacier and Frans Josef we experienced a wonderful rain storm and couldn’t see the glacier at all! It rains 50 feet a year so a rainforest exists right next to the glaciers. There are 200 species of moss and the same number of ferns creating a mind boggling tapestry of soft velvet greens. The Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki are a geologist’s delight. by @karen_fiene

Just returned from a 3 week trip to New Zealand with 2 girlfriends. It’s always been on my bucket list and didn’t disappoint. The natural beauty is stunning, people are very kind, everything was neat and tidy, no billboards, clean public restrooms in every town, only 5 million people but 25 million sheep, no sheep cheese oddly, very good local beer, wine and gin, excellent museums about Māori culture that didn’t shy away from the darker history of broken treaties and mistreatment. In Queen Charlotte Sound we saw glow worms, a brilliant Milky Way, bioluminescence and the Southern Lights, all in one night! We saw hundreds of fur seals, little blue penguins, many birds and thousands of sheep. by @karen_fiene
