Choosing the right brush — or brushes — requires more consideration than you might think: Depending on your hair type and texture, you might need to use different models for different steps in your routine. And then, over the past five or so years, there’s been an explosion of new brands; if once your options were largely limited to the drugstore variety on one end of the spectrum and luxury investments like a Mason Pearson on the other, now there’s a wealth of brushes in between, many made with unique materials, such as carbon fiber or bamboo, and thoughtful designs suited to a wide range of hair types. At House & Hem, I source many of our brands from the Nordics—Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland—as a nod to my own heritage. Our family was set to move from Connecticut to Stockholm this summer too, as an added bonus, but life had other plans.
