BEST BITES @sonyamichellesanford have been sharing favorite food moments with each other for almost 20 years now, and it’s always a surprise - and delight - to hear what recipes she’s cooking up in her kitchen. and on the pod, we share our “best bite of the week” to inspire our community to try new dishes, and always include a recipe or path to making the dish we share so that our community can walk away feeling inspired to cook at home.

however, there are a few favorites that don’t make the cut for an episode: a dish we tried at a restaurant or flavors that we’re still thinking about weeks later, so we share these once a month via our SUBSTACK. even though sonya and i talk several times a week, i’m always surprised by the dishes that she shares here. all of my bites were inspired by my @flamingo_estate farm boxes. subscribe to our *free* SUBSTACK to receive these monthly bites of inspiration.

what was your best bite in september? please share the inspiration!

WHAT I EAT is so much more fun when you share with friends! i always feel inspired - and learn something new in the kitchen - when @sonyamichellesanford and i share what we’ve been cooking and eating to get through a week.

to make mornings easier, i’ve been prepping a version of overnight oats that includes coconut, chia and hemp seeds for a boost of flavor and nutrition, and i top them with whatever fruit we have in the fridge. make-ahead salads are a gift to my future self that’s rummaging around the fridge with a hungry belly, plus they can make casual hosting easier. and i’ve been on the lookout for a creamy fall pasta that relies on a can of pumpkin (one of my pantry staples), and was thrilled to find a great recipe from @feelgoodfoodie.

tune into EPISODE 318 to hear all the breakfasts, lunches, and dinners that sonya and i ate over 2 different days, and subscribe to our *free* SUBSTACK to receive all the recipe links!

do you share what you eat with your food friends?? it helps to remember all the delish meals that you’ve eaten, and just might inspire your friend too 😉

MARKET BAG here’s what i’ve been making with the season’s best produce at the farmers market and from my farm box:

- japanese sweet potatoes with miso glaze and dipping sauce, with herbs, crispy mushrooms, farro and bitter greens
- eggplant adobo, aka cubed eggplant browned in a little oil then braised with garlic, soy sauce, and a little bit of coconut milk until tender/salty/sweet, topped with fresh basil and served over grains
- peperonata, aka sweet peppers melted into olive oil with onions and garlic (a slow but most mostly hands-off process), loaded onto sourdough with any salty, creamy cheese (like feta)
- cottage cheese and cheddar egg bites with the leftover pepperonata (they freeze well too!)

tune into EPISODE 316 for twelve recipes for cozy seasonal cooking, and subscribe to our *free* SUBSTACK to have all the recipes delivered right to your inbox.

SALADS TO MAKE AHEAD to make your busy days easier? yes, please! here are 3 salads that i made recently that hold well for at least a couple of days:

- @alisoneroman ’s 4 bean salad with green romesco is flavor-packed, dairy free, and leans on canned beans for a quick prep
- @smittenkitchen ’s honey harissa farro salad comes together even quicker if you make a double batch of roasted carrots and parsnips - one for dinner (with chicken?) - and then extra for this incredible salad; the dressing is so so good
- ravioli salad with masses of basil to use up the last of your tomatoes and basil, and that container of frozen ravioli or tortellini hiding in your freezer; from one of my fave books: “vegetarian cooking for everyone” by deborah madison

tune into EPISODE 314 to hear 8 make-ahead salads that you can keep stocked in your fridge or take to your next potluck! and subscribe to our *free* SUBSTACK to have all the recipes delivered straight to your inbox.

3 TOFU WINS not surprisingly, my 10 year old son would prefer a cheeseburger and fries over tofu, but one cannot subsist on cheeseburgers alone, so we stretch to try new dishes and flavors. i love tofu, so i tested 8 recipes to see what might work with my family. in truth, i’d make all of them again, but here are the 3 unexpected favorites:

1. golden tofu noodle bowls were a perfect weekend lunch, full of crunchy veggies, chewy rice noodles, and a delicious lime-spiked vinaigrette. turmeric-dusted tofu was as delicious as it is beautiful. my top pick and devoured by the rest of the family.

2. tofu musubi - nori-wrapped sushi rice with teriyaki tofu. i skipped the pineapple bc i didn’t have it. this was a lunchbox win for my son, and I ate the rest at my desk.

3. “nooch,” aka nutritional yeast coats extra-firm tofu, then it gets cruncy in the oven. i served this with veggie fried rice. i’d make this again as a meal prepped protein to throw into salads. this was my husband’s overall pick.

subscribe to our *free* SUBSTACK to see 5 more recipes that we enjoyed, from tacos, stir-fry, a sheet pan dinner, and a creamy silken tofu dressing that has Caesar vibes.

Do you have a tofu recipe you go back to again and again? Please share!

EASY PHYLLO PIE i never thought i’d combine “easy” and “phyllo” in the same sentence, but this flaky, vegetarian phyllo pie is easy to assemble, beautiful to serve, and a pleasure to eat. full of veggies that are at their prime right now - peppers, cauliflower, sweet potato, and zucchini - and combined with the warming flavors of turmeric, paprika, cinnamon, plus a lift from ginger and preserved lemon. a can of chickpeas adds heft and protein to this beautiful stew, and fresh mint is stirred in at the end of cooking.

but what surprised me most was the streamlined assembly process: put half the phyllo onto a buttered baking sheet, drizzle with melted butter, and add the stew and some feta if you like. top with the remaining phyllo sheets and prick them with a paring knife, then drizzle more melted butter so that it soaks into the layers. 30 minutes later you’ve got a stunning dinner that’s buttery, crispy, and deeply savory. and meatless. thank you, @clarkbar, for new family fave.

to link the recipe and hear tips and takeaways from @sonyamichellesanford ’s cookbook club, tune into 313, our “Best Bites of the Week.” and for more dinner inspiration to get you into the fall spirit, tune into EPISODE 312 for @maggiejhoffman’s top 6 dinner recipes, as well as EPISODE

NEED A DINNER PLAN? @maggiejhoffman ’s entire podcast is dedicated to answering the question, “what’s for dinner?,” so we asked maggie for recipes and tips for fall meals that make dinner delicious - and possible- when the calendar is packed and you still have to eat.

i cooked through some of her faves, including this sheet-pan chicken by @clarkbar that was beautiful enough to serve to guests. we took @georginahayden ’s flavor-packed pasta salad to @indieshakes - and meal prepped it for quick lunches with cherry tomatoes from the garden. the sauce for maggie’s fave pasta - a mix of gochujang, brown sugar, and tahini - is spicy, tangy, and would be good on almost anything, but especially on chewy ramen noodles. maggie dropped a fantastic equipment tip that has shaved minutes off my kitchen cleanup, and her meal planning strategy shifted the way i think about my plan. thank you, maggie!

tune into EPISODE 312 for great tips, recipe links, and to make your dinner plan more doable, more delicious, and more fun. please let us know if you try any of these recipes, and head on over to THE DINNER PLAN podcast for more dinnertime inspiration!

BEST OF SUMMER one million downloads (!) from 300+ episodes over 4 seasons…here are some recipes i’ve been making over the summer, and a few that have earned a permanent spot in my kitchen thanks to this project and community 🥰

- galette recipe by @sonyamichellesanford, pie dough recipe from by @fatandflourla, easy frangipane (thanks again, sonya!), and peak stone fruit. this podcast has helped me become a more confident baker (and my family really loves the treats!)
- salad that i crave: crispy onions, crunchy cabbage, pantry-friendly dressing - makes a weeknight dinner at home feel exciting
- tostadas with whatever you have: sometimes beans, sometimes mashed potatoes, always with crispy tortillas (fried or baked!), equals a fun, customizable dinner option (rose-colored potatoes yield pink mashed potatoes, fyi!)
- melon salad of my dreams: collaborating on a menu with a friend brings new ideas and recipes, and this lime-and-herb-packed version is a stunner with any combo of summer melons

tune into EPISODE 308 to hear our summer recap, the recipes we can’t stop cooking from season 4, and what we’re excited to share with you in season 5 (begins next Tuesday 9/2!).

what recipes have you discovered through FOOD FRIENDS PODCAST??

CORN SKILLETS made with summer’s freshest produce, dinner can be ready in 30 minutes and doesn’t require you to turn on the oven. two of my recent faves: miso brown butter rice cakes with corn, and a saucy skillet gnocchi made with zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and sweet corn. both are possible with a well-stocked pantry: when crisped up in a pan, both shelf-stable gnocchi and frozen rice cakes offer a satisfying chewy texture for summer’s sweetest corn (fresh or frozen). stir in a boost of umami - miso, parmesan, pecorino - and a handful of herbs, and you’ve got a winning summer dinner that requires pretty minimal effort.

get the recipe for one-pan gnocchi skillet via our SUBSTACK, and tune into EPISODE 305 to to learn about/link to the rice cakes and an jammy plum crumb bar that @sonyamichellesanford has been dreaming up for years.

what’s crisping up in your skillet this week?
