I wrote “Lamentation on The Disasters of War” in 2006 after the death of my cousin during the US invasion of Iraq. The sentiments of the piece seem ever timely though, as now. Oakland Symphony (Kedrick Armstrong, music director) opens their 26-27 season tomorrow with a bold program, “Defiance,” that features the piece. The title references the powerful 1820 etchings by Goya. by @karimalzand

Along with a piece by me, It features music by two gifted young composers, @berliozsgirlfriend (Nicky Sohn) and @plnvk_ (Paul Novak), who also happen to be former students of mine, played by four dynamic young performers, who also happen to be former students of mine! Friends ~ I am so beyond privileged to be posting some clips of one of my favourite pieces of music I’ve had the opportunity to perform and work on!

If it’s not totally clear - I LOVE new music and contemporary opera. On February 1st 2026, I had the opportunity to sing the role of Woman in Dr. Karim Al-Zand’s world premiere of A Joint Interest at The Brockman Hall for Opera under the direction of Paul Curran and baton of Maestro Harth-Bedoya.

With permission of Dr. Al-Zand, I want to introduce my internet feed to the music I love most of all ~ music that’s uniquely contemporary and allowing for us to depict stories that are so relevant today, reflective of real people, and telling stories that can unite the world through beauty, realism and comedy! Because this opera is SO FUNNY!

It is a gift to work with living composers and composers and musicians who have and are paving the way for us changemakers to make an impact on the world.

With appreciation for my music community, I am so grateful to present some of my favourite clips from A Joint Interest!

Featuring @baritoneburrows as the Burglar @garrettgeno as Police Officer and the MOST INCREDIBLE MUSICIANS from the Rice Shepherd School of Music’s Chamber Orchestra!

Thank you, @enescu_festival and congratulations, Jeongwoo Lee @jwlpiano grand prize winner of the piano division, & winner of the “best performance of the imposed work,” my solo piano piece ”Hammers and Tongs” —which he played with remarkable depth of feeling and musical authority. My hat’s off to all eleven pianists who expertly performed the work. It was amazing to send off the score and then hear premieres by artists from all over the world, none of whom I had worked with beforehand. And what a gift to enjoy so many wonderful interpretations of a brand new work! by @karimalzand
