Hey there.

If you don't know me, I'm Karina, Australian opera singer and creative person living in Switzerland. Here to share art, thoughts, stories, a little bit of European life.

I want to share my view that the OPERA CHORUS life is a valid, viable, successful career path in the increasingly tough performing arts industry.

I'm here to show that creativity and art can exist purely for the joy of creating.

First season in Bern ✔️ what a year it has been. I mean it when I say I can't imagine anywhere I'd rather be. To live in the most beautiful city in the world, with the incredible quality of our theatre, and the most perfect workplace family I could wish for, thank you for every adventure on and off the stage. I think I'll stick around.

Some highlights of the past year:
♡ singing Tichelli's Earth Song at the Bern Casino concert hall - such fine a capella chamber singing I never experienced coming from an opera chorus. The versatility and musical finesse of the team I've found myself in made me want to weep with gratitude - that creating this kind of art is my work.
♡ the ENTIRE Jesus Chris Superstar experience from start to finish. The energy of the show, the people
♡ the "Rataplan" at the Premiere of Forza del Destino - the complete focus and connection between us in that cracker of a chorus number had the air onstage buzzing
♡ making connections with new beautiful friends, truly some of the best, you've changed my life
♡ whirlwind tour to Paris for the Mozart Requiem, adventures in Montmartre till the early hours
♡ Summer in Bern and my beloved Aare River: Felsenau and Thun > Bern float days, the wild nights, the crazy fun friends
♡ Closing the season with a ridiculous never-ending party, sunrise Aare jump from the footbridge, breakfast watching the morning sun light up the Alps.

If I'm honest, I was kind of nervous being the one to bring everyone together for our big group holiday in #Croatia. What if people didn't get along? Turns out I had nothing to worry about.

Seeing my beautiful friends dancing, playing, having the time of their lives together, having met them at totally different stages of my life in different countries... hearing their uncontrollable laughter for a week was pure joy.

As an Australian expat in Europe, friends become your family ♡ these two in particular come from literally opposite ends of Europe (Portugal 🇵🇹 and Russia 🇷🇺, from the border with China) and I'm so happy I could bring them together.

Till next time, you crazy beautiful bunch.

Never tried this one in such a cavernous acoustic before 🫣 a bit strange feeling but still super fun. Here in the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione in #todi , our sacred music concert with #belcantointodi , it's been an incredible 2 weeks intensive work with my voice teacher, some other incredible musicians, plus language course at @la_lingua_la_vita 🇮🇹 brain tired, heart full ❤️

Time for some art! 🎨

For so much of my life I felt like I'm not qualified enough in other artforms to try them. Not good enough, not trained enough, not knowledgeable enough.

I held back so often because I felt I didn't know the rules.

It's taken me long enough to realise that if you just want to create, there. are. no. rules. Just get started. Pick up some paints and play. Experiment. Enjoy. Express. Be human. There is no right or wrong. You don't need a permission slip.
