🇩🇪 33 years ago (!!!) we hosted Ulrike (Ulli “Ricky” Meisner @ullilex) in our exurban Pennsylvania home. As our (former East) German exchange student, Ulli was ready to learn, primed for adventure, and seemingly years more mature than I was, despite being only 6 months older than I. Well, some things never change.

Today, Ulli is an orthopedic surgeon in Bayreuth, married to a fellow doctor, Benno @benno.lex , and raising 3 of the best kids I’ve ever had the pleasure of hanging out with. Her 19 year old, polyglot Emma @emm.lex6, is basically my peer, except she’s insightful and knows how to do her makeup.

Anyway, I have a lot of photos of the back of Ulli’s head: she used her days off from work to lead us all around her town and region. She greeted us at the airport with pretzels 🥨, kept us awake through jet lag, prepared homemade pastries and a typical Bavarian breakfast, and brought us to traditional restaurants as well as Maisel’s Brewery. She found fun activities and REALLY interesting museums to show us, and entertained our curiosity about everything from important historical events to random observations. And she ran in the rain to fetch the car when we were too pooped to follow her back to the parking lot. AND she and Benno SOMEHOW got us front row tickets to the FC Bayern München game (one of these photos is of Harry Kane, not of Ulli).

Ulli managed to “repay” her year’s stay decades ago within 4 days. Thank you so much and I can’t wait to visit again, Ulli! There’s so much more to see with you. ❤️🤍❤️

Germany with my travel buddy, Dad! Gazer of cars, appraiser of real estate, master of historical factoids, and the man on a mission to find the local ruddergesellschaft 🇩🇪🍻🏰🥨

I just got back from an 18 day excursion in Germany and Belgium and want to post a few reflections on the grid. First up, for the guy who made it happen, my dad.

I don’t think I could have picked a better person to wander a new-to-me country. Whereas he has studied and spoken German for decades, visited several times —including as an exchange student in 1963– I have never had the pleasure. I suggested we go, but dad cooked up a plan to get there this May, 2026. We visited our former exchange student, Ulrike (Meisner) Lex (more on her later) then joined a beercentric tour of Bavaria and the Rhein hosted by our alma mater, Carleton College.

From crushing beer and pretzels (and endless pork dishes) at several Brauerei to floating past castles on the Rhine to climbing the Cologne Cathedral, we made a lot of memories. Dad, thank you for saying “yes and” to this adventure, for making this trip feel like the greatest gift, and for being the perfect fellow introvert companion (we’re both quite comfortable with not-awkward-to-us silences).

✶ “I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:
Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.”
✶ This city embraced my great-grandparents, took in so many during the Great Migration, and continues to be a sanctuary. There’s no way I would return to run the Chicago Marathon without something to say about current events. The City of Big Shoulders simultaneously protected her denizens out in the neighborhoods, and threw us runners a party.
✶ I had a perfect day, with a(n almost) 5-minute PR, thanks to so many friends and strangers.
✶ Thank you, again, Chicago.

Several truths and a lie: I used to live in Colorado; I used to ski a lot; last time I skied, I was too young for après 🍻 ; I had never seen a moose in the wild before this weekend 🫎; one of my high school classmates co-founded @flylowgear; my niece learned to ski last weekend; I saw both Paul Simon and Sting play Red Rocks (and probably more but I don’t remember the others); @chaile216 and I once gravel biked 140 miles together-ish on purpose; my mom treated us to a great girls’ weekend at her fave @winterparkresort; I didn’t fall once. by @karinlanger

A homecoming in Chicago to run those streets. 🩵🤍❤️🤍🩵
A few weeks ago, I went back to my favorite city to take a little 26.2 tour, see some old (and new) friends, and conquer a few fears. There was a time I neverever wanted to run a marathon, and unfortunately, there was also a time the thought of visiting Chicago again gave me PTSD panic attacks. Thanks to endorphins (and therapy) I got over it and truly enjoyed myself.

After stringing together a few great training blocks through fall halves, Boston’s surprise summer, and SoCal’s heat waves, I finally finished a marathon feeling strong and eager to see what else I can do. Thanks to coach Dusty @dustynabor as well as Blair @bfergusonvta and Eric at @venturatrainingandathletics for the muscles. 💪 Huge thank you to my ol IMOO09 training mate and possibly best human on the planet, Dan @dantun24, and new friend Mark @markcfung on the day for their pacing skills. It’s, uh, really nice to be happily chatting the whole race, and to have flourescent-socked calves to follow through the crowds. Permission granted to drop the pace sooner next time, provided the first 10 miles were a walk in the park.

We didn’t exactly get to light up the town, but Colleen @colleenlundrigan and my sister Sara @sararowley and I had fun camping out in the Gold Coast at my dear friends Joe & Jeanne’s @mambomamma3 condo. We celebrated Sunday night with a pretty epic Cheese and Recovery Boots party featuring gal pals Marilyn and Suzi @sjs13

And of course, with 49,999 other people in the race, and more in the “village” that supports the whole thing, you’re bound to run into friends. So happy to see old pal Dave @whatsnextdave from the CTC days of yore. He’s my personal Chicago Mararhon @chimarathon guru, with all the tips and tricks. Hi and thanks 😉 🧢 to @leandrewbel, who can simultaneously bounce a whole crowd and have a personal conversation with a few folks at Trackhouses @tracksmithrunning the world round. And so nice to meet my #RADrabbit @runinrabbit squad leader, Sam, who gifted me with prezzies at the expo, and said hi race morning!

Little Colin Feral is doing well adjusting to us and his new environment. @ronanferal has now accepted him as a little brother and they get along accordingly. Some baps when Ronan needs to discipline Colin but nothing worse than that. We could not be happier with the progression…’bout as good as we could have hoped for. More cute pics to come. by @karinlanger
