Linda’s secret ingredient for soups was puff ball mushrooms. She would cube them, dehydrate and store in the freezer. It really added a wonderful savory flavor to a variety of recipes and she would get so excited when we found one. Daniel came in today and asked me how to harvest them so I said, “let’s go and I’ll show you”. I have no words to describe these amazing discoveries. Never have I seen such humongous puff balls. Linda would be over the moon and I’m here scratching my head. Amazing!! 33” across!! And my size 10 for scale. by @karlermisch

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining my sisters and cousins for dinner at Shadows on the Hudson. Great company, meal and view. This morning my sister Gina told me about a friend Gary Dempsey, who she saw at a 9/11 Remembrance Friday night. He shared with her a story about how I helped his daughter in a difficult situation 20+ years ago. What struck me is that this act of service for a friend is a badge of honor that Gary has attached to my name, even many years later. Please know that I’m not honoring myself in this post but to make the point that the things we do, which may seem obvious to us, can mean a great deal to those we help. I had forgotten this story. He didn’t, and I was honored by his acknowledgment. Here’s the lesson: in a world in great pain, there are people all around us that can use the help we can give. It is written, when we put people down, we go down with them and when we lift people up, we rise with them. Who will you lift up today? Image for effect 🤷‍♂️ by @karlermisch

With the help of my son, renovations at 189 continued today after church. Actually, I caulked around the shower doors before church. Over the years, I’ve either built or restored many of the rooms in the home Linda and I loved and I’m sure she would, as always, appreciate what I’ve been doing. Not every project was within my skill set but fear of failure never crossed my mind. I was blessed with a Dad who did many of the same projects in my birth home and the courage to try came directly from him. For that spirit and so much more, I’m honoring you today and every day. Thanks and love to you Dad by @karlermisch

Yesterday was one more step in the trials of this life. As expected, Linda’s burial brought to the surface the full array of emotions from grief to gratitude. All of which, have been present daily since her death in January. For most people, this would seem like a conclusion but to the Bible believing, follower of Jesus Christ, it is only the beginning of the time between now and that day when I will see my Savior and greet Linda with fresh eyes and inexpressible joy. Over the past 4 months I’ve wondered many times how those without faith could possibly manage the sting of death. “For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able, to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day”.

Some might say that going out to feed the horses before sunrise, in the winter, isn’t their idea of fun. But then they would miss the surprises that come when you least expect it.
