On April 21st 2026 an appeals court ruled that “Aligator Alcatraz” immigration detention center can remain open. The center has been under scrutiny for horrific living conditions, including flooding, mosquito infestations, poor medical care and limited access to water and sufficient food. Despite the human rights crisis the legal battle was over the environmental impacts. Stating the Florida run facility wasn’t under federal control and didn’t need to comply with federal law requiring an environmental impact review.

While yes this detention center has numerous negative effects on the Everglades, this should be the least of your concerns. This is a HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE. There is no environmentalism without intersectionality. We cannot protect this planet without protecting its people. Climate justice does not exist without addressing social inequities, racism and xenophobia. by @karleyjo321
