Welcome to the world of the Broomsticklers. Book 1 : A Wobbly Start

A by-the-spellbook young witch teams up with a free-spirited human girl to save the first night at her job from catastrophe in this first book in the illustrated young middle grade Broomsticklers series perfect for fans of The House at the Edge of Magic and Kiki’s Delivery Service.

It’s Broomhilda’s first night of work-study at Broomsticklers, and things are off to a wobbly start. Her boss has been gone for hours, an infamous wizard is demanding an impossible broom repair, and now an overly bubbly human named Poppy has crashed-landed through the roof. Worst of all, Poppy is offering to help. Disaster!

But the grandfather clock is ticking, and it’s time to throw caution to the cauldron. Agreeing to set aside their differences until dawn, Broomhilda and Poppy don their best travel cloaks to complete an increasingly absurd array of errands throughout the magical realm of the Otherworld.

After all, when you’re a broomsmith apprentice, dealing with strange beasts and even stranger hijinks is all in a night’s work!

This has been sitting in my drafts a bit, but I am excited to share this zine I made: Comfort Movie Endings That Make Me Ugly Cry, part 1.

‼️SPOILERS AHEAD (But most of these movies have been out for over 20 years …)

Just a few of my favorites:

👑 Princess Diaries — what can I say? I am a sucker for coming-of-age stories that end with a big celebration dance scene 💃🏼

💖Legally Blonde — when I was a young teen, I loved this movie because of the fashion. As an adult, I love this movie because of Elle Woods’ kind, generous heart (and for her sense of fashion). Elle’s graduation speech always gets me 😭

✨Practical Magic — as a queer neurodivergent person, I have always been drawn to stories where the protagonists struggle to find a true sense of belonging. I love when a misfit embraces their “undesirable”identity and finds their tribe.

☀️ Little Miss Sunshine — when I see that family full of weirdos working with what they’ve got (a shitty old van), I can’t help but laugh and cry. Because life really IS that way. Lots of awful, funny, devastating things happen. But you keep on going. Working with what you have. Remembering that all you really have at the end of the day is the people who are willing to help you push your metaphorical shitty van to a rolling start, whatever the destination, whether you win the pageant or not.

🏡13 Going on 30 — Seeing Jenna Rink rock and cry while she clutches her Dream House is EXACTLY what it feels like to turn 30, imo. As I enter my 30s, this hits especially hard. I find myself reaching back to who I was, what I wanted at 13.

🧠Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — Watching this after a toxic relationship in my 20’s made me read this ending as a cautionary tale. Now, as a happily married person, watching Clementine and Joel run into the sunset over and over into eternity is a powerful image. It means they chose each other, over and over, always remembering the good and embracing each other’s imperfections.

I admire Broomhilda’s kindness, organizational skills, and dedication to her craft (broomsmithing), and I admire Poppy’s positivity, inventiveness, and endless sense of wonder. When I paint my nails inspired by these characters, I imagine myself taking on their strengths as my own! So when I sit down to work on the interior art for this novel, I feel braver because my friends Broomhilda and Poppy are cheering me on ✨🧹💅

Broomhilda and Poppy are from Broomsticklers by @stephcampisi (and illustrated by me!).

Broomsticklers is available for preorder has a new release date — July 2027. I cannot wait for everyone to read this delightful book that Stephanie has written! I’ve been having a blast working on these interiors.

(And yes I see that this video has uploaded the text a little wonky! I am going to choose to embrace this!)

🌈 happy pride month🌈

Here and 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 QUEER 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️and making little acrylic paint quilts in my sketchbook!

These little squares are 2x2 inches. I have been exploring color monochrome color combos in this format and thought I’d compile them into a very limited animation to celebrate queerness!

I do these little squares to meditate, calm myself, and slow down, so each one took about an hour to complete.

My friends @brittbaird_art and @val.kyrie_4 experienced catastrophic loss this weekend in the North Union Apartment fire in Midvale, Utah. They and their pets are safe and they have a temporary place to stay. They still don’t know the extent of the damage. I have organized a fundr@iser to help them get back on their feet in the coming months.

Fairies and Other Little Friends

Honored to be among many incredible artists in the @nucleusportland Salut! 11 Coaster Show this year! The show runs from June 7-July 2 (reception will be held in the evening on June 7). All of my pieces will be available for purchase in person on opening day, and any remaining pieces will be available online after that.

1: all pieces in my Fairies and Other Little Friends Collection.
2-6: my personal favorites
7: using my sketchbook to establish a color scheme for the collection (all pieces are done in colored pencil, watercolor, and acrylic).
8: sketch phase. I drew the pieces digitally and then transferred the drawings with graphite transfer paper
9: finished product! I painted all of the coasters’ edges red as a finishing touch :)

My Halloween costume this year was a love letter to tiny seaside towns and shops. 🌲🌊🏠🎣🛶

I cut and hot glued each and every piece of cardboard by hand with a box cutter (I am still sore)! Making this, I had to strike a balance between depth and flatness for the sake of practicality (after all, I would be trick-or-treating, moving through doorways, and dancing in this). Constraints always lead to creativity!

A few process images, starting on slide 7:

🍁4: Can I get an F in the chat for the crying seagull 🥲

🍁7- I sketched out multiple ideas for wearable houses based on outfits i already owned because I wanted to go all out on my costume without spending too much money. I went with the fish market house because it was the most exciting to me.

🍁8- All told, my costume materials cost less than $10! I got boxes from the hardware store (because I almost never order things online, so we didn’t already have boxes lying around).

🍁9- You can see from my sketch that originally I planned to sculpt lots of things with air dry clay. BUT as I went through the process of making the house, I had more and more ideas for props. I ended up making the props from the cardboard scraps because I knew it would be faster to draw the props I wanted than to sculpt and wait for them to dry. (Mind you, I started making this costume on October 28, and I had Halloween parties to attend on the 30th.)

After a layer of @liquitexofficial gesso, I did a base layer of acrylic paint (also Liquitex) on the house.

I sketched/cut out ideas for props on printer paper to try different compositions.

🍁10-Once I figured out which props I wanted to use, I sketched them on cardboard, cut them out, and gessoed them!

🍁11- A favorite detail of mine was the lovely texture of layering @sargent_art colored pencils on top of the gesso!

🍁12- I used jute and beads I had on hand for rope and to create a fish net

🍁13- I added shimmery watercolor from @picket.fence.gallery.and.gifts on the fish!

🍁18- shoutout to the grasshoppers that crashed my photo shoot 🦗🍂
