ICYMI 🐾🌈 After fighting lymphoma for 2.5 years, Ruthie crossed the rainbow bridge 3 weeks ago. I'm devastated, to say the least. The past few months were hard—she had GI problems that turned out to be late-stage cancer.

She was still relatively healthy before and after the diagnosis. As long as she wanted attention & food—her reasons for living—I had to fight for her health. She'd do the same for me.

When the wonderful #PennVet team said in early July that treatment was viable, I gave it a shot. They also assured me they'd support me—no matter my decision. But Ruthie was so young & still full of life. I couldn't say goodbye. Not yet.

Sadly after one round of chemo, the lymphoma spread to her spleen & both kidneys. Our luck ran out. Her prognosis was bleak & the odds of other treatments working were bleaker. Again, the vet said they'd support any decision.

As much as it pained me, I opted not to try another treatment and to stick to prednisone til she wasn't comfortable. Thankfully, she had a few more good weeks & made it to her 5th birthday. She wasn't even supposed to make it to her 3rd when she was diagnosed!

Nearly a month later, though, her health began to fade. The last few days were brutal. She hid under a table across the room and refused food. That's when I knew it was time.

We were already in DC for a quick farewell tour, visiting friends from our old apartment. But I didn't want her to suffer another 2-hr road trip just to be put down. So I took her to @friendship_hospital where she first got chemo in 2023. It only seemed right for her cancer journey to end where it started.

That, and I knew I could trust Friendship with Ruthie's final moments. I was there, too, holding her paw, singing “You Are My Ruth-Shine,” her nightly lullaby since her diagnosis 2 years ago. My old neighbor (& Ruthie's tía/auntie) was there with us—for both of us. I'm forever grateful. I know Ruthie was too.

Though I was gutted seeing Ruthie take her last breath, it's a comfort knowing she wasn't scared or alone. She was surrounded by love. I couldn't cure her cancer, but at least I stayed by her side til the end. She'd do the same for me.

20 years since we graduated, 20 years since OutKast played every 20 seconds on the radio. Ruthie made a terrific honorary mascot. Not even Clippy the Pirate could make an anchor bandana look that fly ⚓

Thankful I got to see old friends, even though we're still not old yet. I don't care how crappy our joints are, we've still got a few more reunions before we can claim AARP benefits!

In 2019, I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been an open secret, but I haven’t publicly announced it on social media (just at stand-up shows). So why open up about it online now? As a disabled person, I can’t stay quiet about Project 2025.

No matter the illness, everyone in the disabled community can agree on a few things: medical bills suck and our healthcare system is lacking. Project 2025 would make both worse (along with countless issues for other marginalized communities).

I’ve already been shouting from every social media platform (except LinkedIn and MySpace) to vote for Kamala. Voting for anyone else or staying home to protest would secure Trump another four years in office and the opportunity to enact 2025.

There are plenty of reasons not to vote for him (e.g., he’s a liar, bigot, SAer, demagogue, unhinged fascist, etc). But Project 2025’s effect on the healthcare system hits close to home for me, and surely for several people you know.

When you go into that voting booth on Nov. 5 (or before then–vote early if you can!), please remember how disastrous his policies would be on disabled people. Because if I’ve been keeping this a secret for five years, imagine how many other people have chronic health conditions and aren’t speaking up about it.

We need your support. Vote Kamala.
