Parking rules are changing 🚨

UK drivers, there are important changes happening across private parking. From grace periods to appeals and additional fees, here’s what you need to know in 2026. 🚗

Private parking ≠ council parking 🅿️

First things first: not every parking ticket works the same way.

These rules mainly relate to private parking, including supermarket, retail park, residential and privately operated car parks.

Council issued PCNs operate under a different legal framework.

The 10 minute rule ⏱️

Finished your permitted parking period? In many circumstances, private parking operators should allow a 10 minute grace period before issuing a parking charge.

But there are exceptions, so always check the conditions of the car park.

Knowing those extra few minutes could make a big difference when challenging a charge.

You need time to read the signs 👀

The clock shouldn’t simply start the second your tyres enter a car park.

Drivers should be given a reasonable consideration period to find a space, read the signs, understand the terms and decide whether they want to stay.

And importantly, this is separate from the grace period at the end of your stay.

A £100 parking charge could become £70 💸
Under the current private parking industry code, the standard maximum parking charge is generally £100.

Pay within the early payment window and a 40% discount generally applies.

That means:

£100 → £70

Before paying anything, check exactly what you’ve received and the deadline.

Parking signs should be clear 🪧

You shouldn’t need a magnifying glass to understand where you can park.

The private parking industry is moving towards common standards around signage, grace periods, parking notices, evidence and appeals.

Existing operators are transitioning to the Single Code standards through December 2026.

Bigger changes are coming 🏛️

The Government is developing a statutory Private Parking Code of Practice covering England, Scotland and Wales.

The aim is to create stronger and more consistent standards across the private parking sector.
