An Indian-American kid in suburban New York taught himself tabla alone in his bedroom, listening to Zakir Hussain records. No teacher. No guru.

He grew up to wire up the tabla itself, get signed as the first Indo-American artist on a solo deal in the US, and play Tabla Beat Science alongside Zakir Hussain.

But the part nobody tells you is what he did next.

When Karsh Kale signed to Six Degrees Records, he pushed his label to sign Midival Punditz too. By 2001, they became the first Indian electronic act ever signed to an international label. Then they toured America together, before Indian electronica had a name in any algorithm.

In 2019 they co-wrote Train Song for Gully Boy. 14 million plays.

In 2026, Kale returned with DUST. Punditz returned with Love and Machines.

Two pioneers. Still building.

Did you know any of this?

One of the most experienced and accomplished independent artists in the Indian circuit, having moved base from his home in New York, Karsh Kale @karshkale is back in a new avatar - a modern eclectic singer-storyteller. A new album ‘Dust’, 9 years after his last full scale album.

How does an artist of this repertoire, who shaped not just a genre but a movement, is a multi-instrumentalist, has played with the masters, bounce back when life takes a pause?

He deconstructs, fights back and creates.

He kept aside the instruments, detoxed from the process, the tech and the modernity of it all. He asked what if he had just 2 spoons? Could he still create music?

He painted to start creating again, and painting for the first time in his life. This album is much like a book, a chapter at a time. From big movers to mellow contemplation. From surrender to victory.

The collabs are stunning once again - as expected. @ajayprasannaflute Ajay Prasanna, fresh off the new Gorillaz masterpiece, @purbayanch Purbayan Chatterjee, @groovio Gaurav Raina, @bennydayalofficial Benny Dayal, @neeladhikarimusic Neel Adhikari, @salimmerchant Salim Merchant, @komorebi.music Komorebi, @ankurtewari Ankur Tewari, @pavithra.chari Pavitra Chari.

Overall - the album leaves you with a new flavour, but the same vibe. The mystique. The instruments, and great production. And lots of storytelling with Karsh on vocals.

In 1999, Zakir Hussain and bassist-producer Bill Laswell came together to create Tabla Beat Science, a project built around taking the tabla into a new sonic landscape.

The idea grew into the album Tala Matrix (2000), bringing together some remarkable musicians: Zakir Hussain, Bill Laswell, Karsh Kale, Trilok Gurtu, Talvin Singh and Ustad Sultan Khan. Their music combined Hindustani rhythms with bass, drum & bass, electronic production and other contemporary sounds.

The project later evolved into a live ensemble, with DJ Disk adding turntables, Karsh Kale on drums and tabla, Ustad Sultan Khan on sarangi and vocals, and Fabian Alsultany on synthesizers and electronics. Guest musicians included Gigi, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Salim Merchant and the MiDival Punditz.

Their 2002 album Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove captured this evolving lineup, recorded at the Stern Grove Festival in 2001.

A fascinating moment when Indian classical rhythm, electronic music, dub, drum & bass and turntablism came together, with the tabla at its centre.

‘View From Space’ Taken from Bombay Dub Orchestra’s fourth album, ‘Radiotron’ (early 2027)

‘View From Space’ explores the idea that, from afar, our incredible world appears both breathtakingly beautiful and remarkably small. Just as newspapers can report the same story from different perspectives, each revealing a slightly different narrative, this Remix EP reimagines the same composition through the unique voices of artists from around the world.

The original version of ‘View From Space’, features the late legendary @slyandrobbie recorded at Anchor Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.

This new EP brings together an international collective of producers and musicians, each offering their own interpretation of the track.
Featuring remixes by @karshkale (India/USA), SHRF @sheriffmumbles (Trinidad), and Vlastur @vlasturvlash (Greece), alongside new mixes by Bombay Dub Orchestra and Delia Derbyshire Appreciation Society @ddasmusic , the EP celebrates the richness of diverse musical perspectives while reminding us that, viewed from space, we all share the same home.

Today’s reel features a future club classic by the legendary producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and musical visionary @karshkale

What can you see from space?

Borders disappear. Differences fade. Perspective changes.

Perhaps the most important thing we see is that there is only one precious & fragile Earth.
