✨September 21 ✨ One of my top 5 favorite days to celebrate.

When you meet the fresh life that you’ve been growing and feeling in the dark. The imagined becomes real. You sense their essence and personality instantly in the moment the slippery, tiny being lands on your chest. Sometimes they are exactly what you envisioned. Sometimes, they are completely opposite. And it doesn’t mean that you missed something. Just a reminder that parenting can never be fully figured out. It’s bigger than us.

Brooklyn Bodi truly holds his own in our family full of personalities. Actually, he runs the show. This 6 yo has started understanding sarcasm. His need to laugh is insatiable. He knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to ask, always controlling of game rules, and expects undivided attention at the dinner table. But he’s also incredibly sensitive and goofy. An old soul sent to be a bright light. Happy Bday, B. I love watching you grow and witnessing you become who you were created to be. Is the summer really over? And I have a Kindergartener AND a Senior? Ok, just checking. (because how?!) I'm dancing between mourning... and welcoming the routine & cold, crisp air. 🍂

Trying to forget about the bittersweet day that is Back to School in the fastest-year-of-my-life to date.

Mentally, I'm here. (staring at one of the 7 wonders of the world that I forgot to post about this summer)

Thanks for the welcoming downpour followed by the most beautiful rainbow, Grand Canyon. Perhaps a timely reminder for us as we both mourn and celebrate the seasons that come and go. ✨ Celebrating 20 years today ✨

We just returned from walking all over London + Paris together, and I’m in a super sappy mood about us walking through so much life together. About how we started & where we are now.

Some raw thoughts for the sentimental:

✨ A good partnership isn't a linear experience.
✨ 20th anniversary is wayyy more romantic than a honeymoon.
✨ Good communication is always the glue.
✨ Learn to enjoy each others’ passions. Find joy in your partner’s obsessions.
✨ Appreciate your differences, even when they bug you.
✨ Kids make your world smaller for a season, but eventually expand it far more than they ever shrank it.
✨ Riff off each others' jokes. Take it to the extreme. Create inside jokes that get you through.
✨ Be a safe space for each others' shame & insecurities.
✨ Champion each others’ potential.
✨ Whatever stage you’re in, wherever you live, whatever life looks like: find a way to maximize the mess out of it together. Even when (or perhaps especially when) you’re discontent, stressed or unhappy. There is always an experience to maximize.

So hard to believe it's been 20 years since traveling to England, a place I fell in love with and planned to move post-college. 🇬🇧

The last time I was in London, I received word my Mimi, who I was very close with & took to lunch right before my 3-week trip throughout England, had unexpectedly passed away. The remaining last 2 days in London were a blur.

Exploring it with my husband this time around & fully appreciating the history & charm all over again was so special. Thinking about how mysteriously different life unfolds for us all, exactly the way we need.❤️

PS: I found people kind, funny, welcoming, and London was clean and full of life. Every single meal we had was phenomenal. The stereotypes and reputation of bad food are 👎. #London #travelmoments #england #lookright taken in London, England by @kassiefowler

Loved celebrating our oldest at the happiest place on Earth (well the runner up 🌎). His second 16th bday 🎉 Because I made a rule. We're staying in this stage forever.

Caden... you make us so very proud. You can do anything you set your mind to. I love that you taught yourself to play drums, appreciate a good record player, don't conform to popular trends, and learned at a young age to accept your unique self. Thanks for being a caring big brother, a great debater, a dreamer, and a genuinely kind human full of character and integrity.

Been thinking about the changing of parenting seasons a lot lately. I'm sappy and sentimental and also a future-thinker and pre-processor, so it's easy for me to pine for the past as I look ahead at the lightning speed of the year countdown we have left with our oldest in our home.

I'm well aware that our little Brookie will keep us in-home parents for a LONG time. But the season of the 3 oldest is shifting so fast I could cry almost daily.

I'm processing how to look at each season as "what are we building now?" As parents, we're always laying foundations, creating new experiences, and guiding through unknowns. Figuring out what to apply to each kid's needs in their new seasons. While also building new things in our own lives as we age.

So, how will we embrace this new phase with presence & excitement? With soberness and wisdom. With appreciation for what got us here and anticipation that there are greater days ahead.

I have no framework for what's ahead, but trying to look at it through the eyes of a builder. Inadequate feelings and doubt over my mothering abilities are always present, yet I'm learning to trust that the skills and intuition we need will arrive right on time, for each changing and new season. Love to all feeling the changing winds too ❤️ #mothersday #boymom #memories #growingup

The 40s are a mood. And I’m digging it.

Looking back on some memories from what might be my favorite year yet:
* The year John Mayer took a backseat to Chris Stapleton and Leisure (🤷‍♀️)
* Our preschooler graduated and started Kindergarten
* Our 8th grader had no less than 10 sleepovers with lots of memories (broken nose included)
* Trips to the mountains, Asheville, Phoenix, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, D.C., NYC, NorCal, SoCal
* Caden got a taste of college life at UC Berkeley
* Rus wrapped up the elementary season
* A record year for concerts (Billie Eilish, Post Malone, Finneas, Chris Stapleton... to name a few)
* Settling into our new lives in Colorado—the only thing not loving it is our windshields
* Adventuring with @dougie1021 like we’re newlyweds all over again (but better versions)❤️
