Endemic Birds Of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka is home to a rich variety of endemic birds, meaning birds that are found only on the island and nowhere else in the world. Due to its unique climate and habitats, Sri Lanka has developed many rare and colorful bird species. At present, there are 35 endemic bird species recorded in Sri Lanka, including famous birds like the Serendib scops owl and the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Butterflies of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is home to 248 species of butterflies, including 31 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The island’s rich topography, climate, and vegetation—from coastal dry zones to lush hill country—create ideal habitats for these colourful insects.Butterflies are most abundant in the foothills up to 3,000 feet (910 m), while fewer species occur at elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 m). About 20 species are restricted to the low-lyingdry zone, below 500 feet (150 m). Butterfly activity peaks during two key seasons: the southwestern monsoon (March–April) and the northeastern monsoon (September–October),making these months the best for butterfly watching. Sri Lanka’s butterfly fauna is closely related to that of peninsular India, but the island also hosts species with unique evolutionary histories—some introduced by trade, others found only here. Freshwater fishes of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Across the rivers, streams and lakes of Sri Lanka thrives an extraordinary diversity of freshwater fishes, with around 95 recorded species — over half of them found only on this island. Nearly 70% of Sri Lanka’s freshwater species are endemic, making it one of the world’s true aquatic biodiversity hotspots (Goonatilake, 2007). These fishes flourish across the country’s unique tropical lowland and montane ecosystems, from fast-flowing streams to placid reservoirs. The Serendib Scops Owl (Otus thilohoffmanni) The Serendib Scops Owl is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest ornithological discoveries and the country’s most recently described endemic bird, first identified in 2004. Measuring only around 16–17 cm, this tiny owl is marked by its rufous-brown plumage, bright orange-yellow eyes, and the absence of ear-tufts that makes it stand out among other scops owls.Found exclusively in the lowland rainforests of southwest Sri Lanka, it is a nocturnal and secretive species, often detected only by its soft ‘pu-u-u’ call at dusk. Tickell’s blue flycatcher (Cyornis tickelliae)Tickell’s blue flycatcher is a small, colorful forest bird found across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka and India. The male has bright blue upperparts with an orange throat and breast, while the female is duller olive-brown with bluish wings and tail. These birds usually live in shaded forests, wooded gardens, and bamboo groves, where they feed mainly on insects by catching them in flight or picking them from leaves.During the breeding season, Tickell’s blue flycatchers build cup-shaped nests using dry leaves, moss, roots, and plant fibers. The nests are often placed in tree holes, rocky crevices, or banks near streams, usually hidden for protection. The female lays about 3–5 eggs, and both parents help care for the chicks after hatching.
