- ink.
black in the shape of black.
and it opens.
and it opens.
like a hand that never learned to close.
the dark takes the long way down.
takes the stairs.
takes its time.
i’d forgotten
you could take this long
to fall.
and the water is doing its best.
god, it’s good at this.
a little thinner.
a little easier to see through.
until you can set the glass on a table
and talk about something else.
four seconds, give or take.
this is the third.
the ink is still being something.
to have another second
without having to spend this one.
hold it.
hold it right there.
hold it like a note
nobody’s paying you to hold,
and you’re running out,
and you can hear it going,
and you keep trying to give it
somewhere to go.
somebody will need the glass.
they’ll tip it into the sink,
run the tap,
set it upside down beside the others.
people get thirsty.
i keep coming back
to the third second.
all that black
still figuring out
how far it reaches.
still open.
still turning.
still falling
through a glass
i’ve already washed. -

This summer has been about learning, growing, and reconnecting with the things that make me, me. 🌱
Alongside work, I’ve been investing in a few continuing education adventures for myself. I had an incredible week in June at the @pilobolus Summer Intensive.
Next stop: Denver, CO for the AMTA National Convention. I’m excited to keep learning and bringing new ideas back to my practice. ✨ by @kat.corb

- She told me she wasn’t an artist, said it felt more like a game. Rules she’d figured out young. Where to put the weight so it looks easy. How long to hold still before it starts to cost you something and how to make sure no one sees the moment it does.

She taught kids at a studio off the main road. Six and seven year olds who hadn’t learned yet to be embarrassed by their own noise. She said that was the part she couldn’t explain. Standing in a room full of children who still thought rhythm was something the body just did. She corrected their posture and counted them in and some nights drove home with the sound still in her feet.

We talked for a while. She kept pulling at a thread on her sleeve and I almost said something about it and then understood that was part of it too. Letting one small thing go undone so the rest reads as deliberate.

I asked if she ever got tired of it. She said tired wasn’t the word. She said sometimes she forgets she’s playing and that’s when it gets strange. Because then she has to decide if the thing she just did was her or the game, and mostly she doesn’t want to know.

She looked at me when she said that like she was waiting to see if I’d make it into something. I didn’t.

After we finished she put her coat on and checked her phone and said she had a class in forty minutes. I watched her walk to her car. She was already someone else by the time she opened the door. And I thought about those kids, how they’d see her walk in and have no idea that an hour ago she was the stillest person I’ve ever been in a room with. How she’d clap her hands and count them in and mean it. How that’s the thing. She always means it. Every single version. -
