Everybody Wants This: Exploring the Myth and Magic of Fashion

Stereotypical portrayals of the fashion industry – the ‘myth of fashion’ – examined through the lens of Bourdieu’s concepts of fields, capital, and habitus, and reimagined into an Alice in Wonderland-inspired narrative; a lineup of archetypal characters inspired by popular fictional and real-life stories related to the field.

Or in simpler terms: a semi-autobiographical satire about the fashion industry, its culture, and the absurdity of it all

Throughout the research and design process, some of my guiding question were:

1) What is the appeal of the mythologized world of fashion and its culture based on?
2) How can a garment change its wearer’s habitus and the way we perceive their position in a field? by @kat.fi.sh

LOOK 2 – WHITE RABBIT

” — when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself,

’Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!’

— but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its [pocket], and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet — and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.”

The busy assistant

Silk organza bomber jacket
17 pieces individually ruched by hand
Raw edge fringe at the seams frayed by hand by an ARMY of friends – I owe you my life
15 ish meters of fabric

Mohair knit top and trousers

LOOK 3 – TRANSFORMATION

”’What a curious feeling!’ said Alice, ’I must be shutting up like a telescope.’
And so it was indeed: she was now only ten inches high, and her face brightened up at the thought that she was now the right size for going through the little door into that lovely garden.

— but alas for poor Alice! when she got to the door, she found she had forgotten the little golden key, and when she went back to the table for it, she found she could not possibly reach it

— and when she had tired herself out with trying, the poor little thing sat down and cried.”

Alice 2.0
It’s actually cerulean
She hates me Nigel
”Important to the field of fashion, then, is the ability to articulate recognized forms of fashion capital and develop an appropriate fashion habitus so that one’s body actually looks like it belongs.”
A Cinderella moment

A stiff, skewed, and shrunk mini version of look 1
Silk satin organza mini dress
Supported by a sculptural rigilene structure
Silk satin apron
