Another inspired Visual AIDS @visual_aids Research Symposium in the books which took place this past Friday, October 2nd at @newmuseum! Great updates on the Visual AIDS Archive and illuminating presentations from the research fellow cohort. Continually grateful to be part of a community of individuals who rethink strategies of care, holding, and belonging through the lens of HIV/AIDS. taken in New Museum by @kat_cheairs

Have to go back to the Forging Ahead exhibition that just opened last night @schomburgcenter! So many inspiring works including photographs from the beloved, Nona Faustine, who we lost too soon last spring. It had also been a minute since I saw Steven Fullwood IRL. taken in Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library by @kat_cheairs

This morning, I walked through the small park at 8 Ave & 13th for the first time ever. My sock had rolled down into my shoe (we all know how annoying that is) and I stopped at this bench to adjust the sock. When I looked at the name plate, it was a bench dedicated to writer and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston! I was thinking about Hurston a lot on my trip to TN and it’s been a month since I was there doing my own ethnographic fieldwork. Sometimes we get these signs that we’re being cared for by unseen forces, and this was a moment so deliberate so orchestrated through an annoying sock buried in my shoe that left me with a sense of being guided and directed. No matter what is going on, tapping into the frequency of noticing allows for magic to appear all around us even in the places and experiences where they’re least expected. by @kat_cheairs

It’s always beautiful to see the incomparable Oxana Chi and Layla Zami @chizami perform together and even rarer since they no longer live in NYC. The performance is inspired by Frida Kahlo and was presented this past weekend at the International Human Rights Art Festival at the Court Square Theater. I am grateful to be in a community of such an incredible artists and thinkers. And, yummy ceviche after the show. 🙏🏽✨ taken in Court Square Theater in LIC by @kat_cheairs

I got back to NYC on Monday evening and am still finding my footing a bit after spending over a week in Middle TN for my dissertation fieldwork- a productive, profound, and yet intense experience. In that time, I traveled 2,200 miles (by car), visited four sites deeply connected to histories of enslavement in the area, two cemeteries containing gravesites of second-great-grandparents from my father's side of the family, and collected close to four hundred individual assets of audio, photo, and video files comprising my data from this deep-dive exploration. It was certainly a time-travel experience, and I am not sure I am quite back yet, or perhaps residing in a liminal/between space somewhere between Harlem and the countryside of Middle TN.

This image is of a garden that enslaved people cultivated at a site called Carnton. Enslaved people had gardens to supplement the meager rations they received, and a local organization and community gardener still care for this one, ensuring the seasonal rotation of herbs and vegetables.

There is so much more to share, and I am considering hosting a virtual program sometime in October for friends and supporters to hear more about my fieldwork experience. I will certainly keep you posted on that.

Last but certainly not least, none of this could have been possible without the generous support of each of you who donated to my GoFundMe. Donations of all sizes made this possible, and every last penny of it was needed to pull this off. I am immensely grateful to have exceeded my initial goal, raising close to $5400 in total donations.

I need to cocoon a bit and will reemerge soon with additional updates.

With deep thanks and appreciation.

Peace and blessings,

Kat

Sharing a quick update about my upcoming dissertation fieldwork research trip to TN! I’ll be heading out on Saturday, August 22nd and back in NYC on the 31st. The GoFundMe to raise funds for the trip is active and ongoing and donations have continued to come in since August 1st. I am still hoping to reach my goal of $5k and I’ve only got about $500 to go to reach that. Thank you to everyone who has supported and shared the fundraiser so far. I am deeply grateful. Check out the link in my bio for more info about the project and to donate. You can also donate via Venmo: MakedaArts
