I got sober in 2016.

While I was in rehab, A Moon Shaped Pool was released which was great but I was stuck in rehab with little to no access to the outside world, which included any electronics. As a long time Radiohead fan, I had to have the album. So one day, I snuck onto the community computer and Amazon primed the album to the rehab center - no guts, no glory - right?

The only music I had access to during those 90 days of inpatient rehab was Radiohead, specifically A Moon Shaped Pool album. So during one of my loneliest and hopeless points in my life, I clung onto every word of A Moon Shaped Pool. I cried, I sang along, I mourned my previous little isolated life, and I let every lyric every chord be a balm to my aching soul.

You’ll see me crying in this video- not because I’m sad but because I can’t believe I’m here. I’m 9 years sober and I flew myself to London to see Radiohead live with one of my best friends at what many say was just about the hardest concert tickets to obtain. I cried bc I’m no longer that empty shell of a human that entered rehab in 2016. I cried bc my life today is beyond my wildest dreams, nothing I could have ever conceived before sobriety. I have my career back, I’m in a DREAM job, I get to travel whenever, and I’m living life as a sober woman experiencing every moment without the use of any substances. And god, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m back to making that little girl from small town TN proud.

I heard someone say once that Radiohead is for people who aren’t afraid of their sadness. I no longer run from the sadness and pain, I embrace it and feel every ache.

There is always a quiet ache I feel when I take pictures because I know the moment is slowly disappearing. Photo Booth was Fotoautomatica in Florence (more below).

Fotoautomatica are vintage photo booths dotted around Florence, Italy that produce black-and-white film photos with a decades-old analogue camera. The creator is Matteo Sani who left his job and traveled across Eastern Europe (from Tallinn to Tirana) to source vintage photo booths, shipping them back to Italy to bring them back to life. Unlike modern digital booths, these machines house a miniature darkroom inside. A mechanical robotic hand physically dips the photo paper into real liquid chemical baths. The process takes about 4.5 minutes. Because there are no digital negatives, each black-and-white photo strip is an original, one-of-a-kind exposure.

I walked forever just to find one bc I had to see and experience this for myself. I used to exclusively shoot film.
