Saturday morning, while UChicago aired President Zimmer and Provost Ka Yee Lee’s pre-recorded conferral of degrees upon my fellow graduates and myself, student and community protestors led by @carenotcops and @uchistudentaction were denied food, water, sleep, and use of a bathroom by UCPD during a sit in at their headquarters demanding a public meeting with Provost Lee and UCPD Chief Kenton Rainey. UChicago hides behind its precious Principles of Free Speech™️ as a means of protecting hate speech and avoiding accountability for saying wack shit completely disconnected from the non-theoretical realities off-campus, then leverages their students’ most fundamental rights in a blatant effort to shut down the protest and suppress our frustrations, pain, and demands: a safer, more caring community, where students and neighbors aren’t shot, intimidated, terrorized. Since then, leaked emails revealed the administration worked with multiple news outlets to suppress coverage of the protests and dilute our demands, and they refuse to hold a public meeting on this topic. Freedom of speech for whom, UChicago? Everyone except your students and the South Siders you’ve displaced?

This University has always delegated the care aspects of college life to the many employees that truly interact with us, impact our experience, and are often what make it wonderful, while often severely underfunding them: housing, dining, grad students, student counseling, student life facilitators, Graduate Students, security guards that stand in the cold for hours, every building staffer, GRAD STUDENTS, librarians, @uchicagogsu, and so many others, but especially the graduate students that do more work for the undergraduate academic experience than any higher up. The administration has continually shown a lack of care for their own community and avoided accountability for a long history of transgressions.

The University of Chicago is not exempt from criticism, accountability, or demands from the student body that our administration reprioritize the lives of Hyde Park, Kenwood, Woodlawn, and the South Side over their pride. 1/2 taken in The University of Chicago by @katalinadale
