After 4 long years, my magnum opus, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩, now belongs to you.

This album is the physical manifestation of my ancestors’ will, perseverance, wisdom, joy, and suffering brought into this realm, and it’s so surreal that I’m finally delivering it to you. I almost can’t believe it. I’m really lucky to know for a fact that my grandfather for whom this project is dedicated would’ve been immensely proud of it if he were still here. He literally would have made every single person in Barbados listen to it 🥀

Last night, Katalyst made its New York debut at Blue Note New York, and it was a phenomenal arrival.

Founded by Greg Paul, the Inglewood-based Katalyst Collective brought a sound that felt expansive, fearless, and deeply alive. The collective’s artistry was carried by Greg Paul, Brandon Cordoba, David Otis, Jonah Levine, Ahmad Dubose, Corbin Jones, and Marlon Spears—with Brian Hargrove also part of the collective, though not present last night while touring. Joined by guest artist Tonina Saputo, the band created a performance that was at once powerful, fluid, intimate, and full of spirit.

The first set went nearly two hours before a packed house, and the room stayed with them every step of the way. There was a pulse in the music that held the audience close—layered grooves, bold improvisation, tenderness, risk, and joy, all moving together as one voice. By the time I left, the line of people waiting outside stretched down the block, anticipating their set.

What made the night so memorable was not only the musicianship of each player, but the way the collective moved as a living conversation. Greg Paul’s vision was clear, Brandon Cordoba’s harmonic language was rich and searching, David Otis and Jonah Levine brought depth and fire to the horns, Ahmad Dubose added texture and spirit, Corbin Jones and Marlon Spears grounded the music with groove and movement, and Tonina Saputo added a beautiful and distinctive presence of her own.

These photographs are only a small reflection of what filled the room, but I hope they carry some of the rhythm, energy, and feeling of a remarkable Blue Note debut.
