How To Touch a Dragonfly (2023)
Opening 19. October, S-Factory, Seoul

How to Touch a Dragonfly's 4m dome is a deconstructed low-resolution screen made of over two thousand hexagonal pixels, created using the traditional Korean paper Hanji, handmade for the exhibition by the Jeonju Millennium Hanji Museum.

Exploring insect migration driven by the human re-sculpting of the biosphere, the dome creates an immersive visual and sonic environment in which the visitor encounters the world through the eyes of dragonflies.

“It used to be a game when we were kids, we would catch the dragonflies in our hands and hold them. Their wings feel like paper like the Hanji in my grandparents doors. Crinkly but strong. You just don’t see them so much anymore.”

How do you touch a dragonfly that isn’t there?

What an amazing premiere! Thank you to @kiaf_official and curator @sgdg_seungahlee for the opportunity to share #EmptyFields #performance at #kiaf.

In Empty Fields, I use #fieldrecording from around #Korea and beyond to explore the loss of diversity from the corporeal realm and its migration into the digital realm.

Using wearable controllers and lightweight #tech, I become a hyperdimensional sound witch spinning sound worlds from the environment and from #ai augmentation, exploring emerging aesthetics of the #soundscapes in which we are immersed.

Thanks for the incredible positive reception Kiaf! I’m back on Saturday 7th September at 3pm. Don’t miss it!

Porous Grounds revolves around a series of sculptural forms made of hanji, which affect the user's perception of sound. These sculptures have been incorporated into site-specific performances and are presented alongside photographic documentation and audio visual compositions that elaborate on the destruction and redevelopment of Bogwang-dong and Sani-myeon.

The sculptural and multimedia installation responds to the ongoing Hannam 3 / Bogwang-dong redevelopment in Seoul and the development of the Korean National AI Data Centre at Solaseado in Haenam. The Bogwang-dong site represents a concentrated site of urban transformation. The Haenam site is representative of large-scale land and habitat transformation, infrastructure construction and technological investment. Together the sites show rural and urban faces of the convergence of architecture, capital, displacement, and aspiration.

Performing in-character as the Hyperdimensional Techno-Witch, Austen carried out a series of performances at these sites, navigating the hard and soft physical, social and security-enforced boundaries, while exploring their soundscapes with the Porous Grounds sculptures.

Porous Grounds examines this through material resonance, spatial memory, and environmental traces. The installation centres on modular sculptural forms constructed using hanji, combined with lightweight structural elements and embedded sound components. Hanji functions as a cultural reference and as an active membrane that diffuses light, shapes acoustics, and registers airflow and vibration. The material’s permeability operates as a conceptual counterpoint to the sealed surfaces and controlled atmospheres of contemporary high-rise development.

✨ Monday Salon, June 8 ✨

✨ About the Presenter @katausten
Kat Austen's creates work that interrogates human connection to landscapes, highlighting the empathy and paradox at the heart of our species’ relationships to the non-human and more-than-human. Austen’s work departs from site-specific research, in which she employs deep listening and embodied techniques to gain a visceral understanding of place. This experience is transported into her work through composition, visuals, sculpture and movement.

✨ At Monday Salon
Landscapes in transformation, sealed skin of the planet. Does the Earth need to sweat? To breathe? Who can access, which can access, what can access, what can escape? Borders offer protection but they limit, too. How porous is the ground?
