springtime in the city simply warms up the soul. mama visits & sweet time with friends helps speed the thawing process, too.

things changed quick over the last few months. lots of interviews, intentional time with old & new friends, celebrating soon-to-be mommies, flowers & sunshine, yummy food, and finding a new normal without my best friend to yap to at bedtime. ma came to treat me to a week of being a tourist again. started four different part time jobs. discovered new parks. photographed favorite buildings. appreciated theatre over and over. thanks for being home, new york. by @kate_friesen

oh tuckleberry finn, tuckerroni, tuckerbear, cuddle bug, snuggle muffin, tuck-tuck, old man, pupperoni, flufferbutt, little lizard, jon bon tucki. my best boy, tuck. 🐾

over the rainbow bridge & right into heaven where all dogs go, just like annabelle & charlie taught us. 🌈✨

my earliest memory with my best friend was one of the first nights we brought him home and he cuddled up on my chest for a bit before my bed time, it was a school night. sixth grade. last week, only a couple days before he passed, i needed to run errands but tuck was laying on my chest, snuggled up really good, so i stayed home instead. now a graduated 29-year-old. we had 18 years together… he lived 18.5 exciting, silly, anxious, sleepy, strong, cuddly years.

he may have relied on me for food & water, a shelter, warm bed(s), baths, vet check ups, plenty of medicine, and snuggles, but boy oh boy did I rely on him these last few months more than he ever could’ve needed me. moving to new york city has been the such a big challenge & i know he stuck around just long enough to make sure i’d be okay.

like his multiple names, he had dozens of hairstyles & a few different personalities. he spent his days either licking whatever his tongue could reach or asleep. he was camera-shy, but cute as a button. he loved any human who showed him the slightest attention. he was never interested in toys, but he would dance a whole jig for a treat. we were each other’s emotional support buddies. his zoomies were the most entertaining moments i’ve witnessed. his dramatics definitely would have gotten him accepted into juilliard or won him a tony. he was the best boy & there will forever be a paw print-sized hole in my heart. thanks for growing up with me, tuckleberry finn. find the fluffiest, snuggliest, warmest bed up there & i’ll send you all the kisses & scritches. by @kate_friesen

one month as a new yorker. 🍎

living in the city has been a little dream of mine since as far back in my memories as i can reach. i genuinely don’t remember a time i didn’t want to be here. little kate dreamt, high school kate set a goal, & big kate made a plan.

five years ago, i came to the city for the very first time. coming out of the shutdown, i thought maybe it was time to make the move, but God said to wait. His plan was even greater. instead, i got the opportunity to travel North America, make numerous forever friends, & experience so many adventures i never imagined before.

five months ago, i came to the city to celebrate all the friends making their broadway dreams a reality, and in those few days, i realized God was making a way for me to realize my big city dreams after almost three decades of praying for this moment.

i am so grateful for the community i now have here, the childhood dog who gave up his grassy yards to join me on these city sidewalks, the family who made sacrifices to support me, & God’s faithful plan that places me exactly where I’m meant to be.

the road to get here was challenging, and the road ahead won’t be much different, but little kate doesn’t have to worry that her biggest dream might be forever out of reach. He brought us here, finally.

in the last year and a half, i’ve spent a cumulative total of three and a half months in canada. a third of that time was in T O R O N T O. what a lovely city, in a lovely country, with lovely people, during a lovely holiday season, enjoying lovely food, & (as always in canada) a totally lovely time. 🍁 taken in Toronto, Ontario by @kate_friesen

well, what a year. a good one. a fairly sad one. one filled with potential and disappointment simultaneously. in some ways, i’m grateful to see it go, to move forward from experiences still tender & needing distance from. but, it was also a year that opened doors and introduced new friends (& even new tiny humans), so i’ll remember those parts fondly. most importantly, 2025 is a year filled with moments that have placed me in a perfect position to make 2026 the most exciting year yet. ✨

we love a year where: a visit to chicago is required, you end up in the city of the winning football team the night of the superbowl, travel is often, your favorite band goes on tour TWICE and you travel to europe to make sure you see both, theatre is plentiful, plane windows are open, cubicles are temporary, arkansas cows are sleepy, best friends have littles you need to visit, childhood pets turn 18 [!!!], sporting event tickets include friends, && trivia nights are championed.

we don’t love a year where: you have to say ‘goodbye’ to a grandparent.

never want a year to go by without a chance to travel somewhere special with my ma. 🗺️ especially if that somewhere is in canada & it takes you both back to sweet childhood memories. thank you, prince edward island, for our bosom friend anne (with an ‘e’) & for beautiful memories of the year 2025.

it only took 8 seconds to decide it was a good idea to book the tickets & travel across the globe for a concert during a single week off of tour, but 8 months to process and then post about the magical time that was had. 🌹

barcelona was a dream & a whirlwind & a journey. grateful for friends who love the boys & the adventure just as much as me … and for another story to add to my memoir. i am absolutely head over heals for this city and need to be back in spain immediately. the architecture, people, art, culture, weather, language, food…. estoy enamorado.

an apartment that looked over the sagrada família, finally having my camera back in my hands to capture the brilliance of gaudí, walking mesmerized through park güell, eating tapas for every meal, contemplating life while enjoying masterpieces of picasso, & seeing the city come to life on el día de la rosa y el libro. oh, & my sixth twenty one pilots concert (but first across the pond). humbly inspired. taken in Barcelona, Spain by @kate_friesen

gander, newfoundland, canada. 🇨🇦

fell in love with this place five years ago when i listened to the full come from away recording for the first time …. and then again four years ago when i finally saw the story come to life on the broadway stage, mere blocks from ground zero …. and then all over again two years ago when i worked rehearsals for the first year of the bus & truck tour, spending 9/11 volunteering in the city with the company …. and then a year ago, officially joining the @wecomefromaway family …. and ultimately giving a piece of my heart to the rock this summer when we witnessed for ourselves all the places we had told people across north america about. we saw the town with our own eyes & shook hands with the humans who make this place unforgettable.

i am grateful that the tragedy in new york is not the only moment to be remembered about 9/11, but that we can celebrate the unity, generosity, kindness, & humanity shared in the town of gander that day, too.

like numerous others, my life is forever changed by this little place. and i kissed the fish so i am officially a newfoundlander. 🐟
