A unique world, an interesting premise, a compelling conflict can feel empty unless paired with characters facing real choices, real heartache, real consequence.

This is the type of book I want to read and the type of book I always aspire to write.

Every book I release, I pour my whole heart into its making in the hopes these stories connect with those who read them!

As the landscape of publishing continues to evolve I want my readers to know where I stand.

I do not use generative AI in any part of my process. Research, drafting, writing editing it’s all under my own brain power. If this means I’m left behind, that’s okay.

My books have been used to train ai. My books have pirated. Two separate trespasses, the same disrespect. The same entitlement. I don’t want to be a part of a system that harms creatives. (And I like my brain and want to keep using it 🤭)

With poor detection tools and false accusations causing irreparable damage, I am also acutely aware that ai witch-hunts are not the answer either.

The best I can do as an author is to be as upfront as I can as to my process and support others committed to their craft.

Katee is a semi-recent transplant to central Alberta and is obsessed with the big sky and warm hearts of this region. She writes science fiction and fantasy stories that often meld into a singular genre of science fantasy. Her debut novel, Glass Helix, was traditionally published through Stag Beetle Books, with her following offerings, Earthbound and Skysworn, moving into the indie space.
Currently she is a part of the Classics Rebooted Kickstarter with eight other authors with her dystopian ice zombie retelling of the Iliad.

Releasing this coming week, I’m excited to share Glass Helix, refreshed and glowed up!

A near future earth is trying to find their way back from a genetic revolution that left humanity frail and fading. Believing they must sacrifice the weak to pave a way forward for the strong, Khai is caught in a system that forgets the heart of what it is to be human. Hope.

Inspired by the utopian looking dystopia of 1984 and the callous hierarchy of Gattaca, Glass Helix is a character driven story of childhood friends fighting for a future together.

I listened to The Ash Remains on audio and got swept up into this dragon adventure. The ensemble cast works really well and while Sen may have been my favourite, I was equally invested in the other characters storylines.

The narration was excellent — 10/10

The epic nature of the story works wonderfully, all gaining momentum and building throughout the book, to a nail-biting conclusion.

There were a couple world building elements I thought were unique from the usual dragon rider structures and I really enjoyed. Not every dragon rider is bonded to their dragon and some of the bonds forged were outside of the known magic which was super intriguing.

I’ve released a book each fall for the last four years, but the truth is it’s taken me double that time to see these projects come to light.

Let’s talk about it.

So much of writing and being an author is invisible. We can share pieces of the journey, highlights, and triumphs, but the truth is that most of the real work is done in quiet.

Before I ever committed to seeing a novel to completion, I scribbled in journals and wrote short stories and poetry. I didn’t share it publicly or talk about my dream of writing a book to more than a cherished few.

I was the kid that couldn’t spell and struggled with grammar. Flitted about with classically inattentive adhd.

To start drafting Glass Helix was to battle my own demons and decide failure was better than fear.

So many days the choice to keep going felt daunting. Overwhelming. The task impossibly big and my voice infinitely small.

Yet, word by word, they came to be, written by the proverbial turtle.

And I still have to remind myself it’s not a race.

Sharing our work is an offering. It’s cost us something in its creation. Sacrifice. Effort. Time. Heartache.
But it also connect us. Challenges us. Makes us brave.

In all the ups and downs of publishing this is the reality I must hold to. Our stories matter. The process matters. Write what you must.
