Saw my folks tonight! My parents have these photos of my grandfather, the Reverend Augustus “Gus” Batten, preparing for Memorial Day. In addition to serving as an Episcopal minister, he also served as a Major and military chaplain in WW2. I miss him; he has been gone 40 years now. He was ahead of his time according to my dad and my grandmother (who passed several years ago now, whom I also miss). Just finished “The Island of Missing Trees” by Elif Shafak. A touching book that has a Fig tree as one of the narrators. Set in present-day England and flashing back to 1974 to the island of Cypress during the Greek and Turkish civil war, it explores the generational impact of trauma. Well-written and for the nature lover, full of fascinating facts about trees. by @kateemacdowell

Just finished reading Ocean Vuong’s latest work: The Emperor of Gladness. Like his first book, this book blends the poetic with the hardships of life. It follows Hai, a 20-year-old Vietnamese man as his troubled life is transformed by a small group of strong-willed and eccentric characters. I highly recommend this as well as his first book: On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. by @kateemacdowell

Just finished Lydia Millet’s novel DINOSAURS. It was good—a simple character study of a 45-year-old man who relocates to Arizona after the end of a relationship. The action of the novel is largely psychological—highlighting how the mundane can have rich psychological depth worthy of mining. by @kateemacdowell

So Gus is absolutely terrified of wind rattling the 100-year-old windows in my house. Andy and I barely slept last as he crawled on our heads trying to find an”safe” place from the wind. I finally shooed him to the living room where it was quieter and he settled down for the rest of the evening. Poor Gus. Below Gus hiding under my desk. by @kateemacdowell
