Preview: Thursday 1 October, 6–8pm

What Remains Within, an exhibition curated by Paola Lucente, brings together the work of three contemporary artists concerned with memory, inheritance and the traces experience leaves behind. Coinciding with our first solo exhibition of Nicola Turner, I Tear Secrets from Your Yielding Flesh, the exhibition considers the histories we inherit and the physical and emotional traces they leave within us.

The exhibition will take place in the Project Room on the first floor of our Hanover Square gallery.

The exhibition will run 1 October – 7 November 2026.

5/5 Studio Ā

Currently thinking about revision; drawing and revising by re-drawing over and over; how the revision might be done prior to, or during the painting. Frank Auerbach had said he would do many versions and keep scraping them off until he could render the painting 'in one breath'. Helen Frankenthaler talked about a gesture being made 'in one stroke' (or pour). I'm interested in the layering and richness of revision as well as the freshness of being so direct. I am also thinking about the paintings ground, how slippery or absorbent it is, and how much the surface affects the brush mark.

As well as trying not to think at all.

The work in the photos are almost all works in progress, studio, sketchbooks, and two books I'm currently reading/loving.

1-9. studio
10. How Painting Happens (and why it matters), Martin Gayford
11-13. Studio
14. Exposure, Olivia Sudjic
15. Studio
16-18. More from 'Six Days in September', John Hoyland

If you're interested in seeing more of my work, my recent 2024 monograph is available either through Cob Library @cob.library or just send me a direct message.

4/5: Mood seeping in

It’s always about mood. Whilst working toward the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award exhibition in 2014, I was experiencing extreme morning sickness while pregnant. The work born out of that period was described by some at the time as ā€˜macabre’, which felt fitting because my experience of the world at that time felt macabre.Ā I’d always been interested in the uncanny, the abject- not the horror of reality, but something more psychological.Ā Looking at that body of work with hindsight, I can recall the mood of heightened fear of the world, and the constant nausea.

The works in this post were all made between the end of 2023 and 2024. Rather than being a representation of reality, imagery in my work emerges like as if out of a swamp where everything that has gone before melts and turns into something else. It’s all about mood. I need time and distance before I can unpick it. Now that some time has passed since I made these works, it’s impossible not to recognise that the literal and metaphorical palette has changed, and grown darker.Ā

I hadn’t witnessed true horror unfolding before my eyes, in real time, until Israel’s accelerated genocide. We’ve all seen it. Children dying at the hands of their occupiers, 27 of them a day on average, for nearly 2 years now, in Gaza and the West Bank, whole families wiped out. Men, women, and children- 83% of those killed are civilians, a population brutalised, humiliated, dehumanised, subjugated, and oppressedĀ for decades. From horror to despair, to disorientation, to shame at my own complicity, to outrage at the silence, I recall the frantic feeling of grabbing at strawsĀ to express protest.Ā The gaslighting by the media and those who lead us headlong into mass complicity in an openly celebrated genocide while squashing any form of protest. TheĀ disillusionment and the waking up. The abhorrent normalisation of it, and the enormity of the power the averted gaze has allowed; that this still be continuing today! Solidarity with Palestine. I repeat the resounding call for a ceasefire, end all arms sales to Israel, impose widespread sanctions, let aid in, and end the occupation and genocide NOW.
