Kids do not just sign up for a sport. They sign up for teammates, car rides, snack breaks, inside jokes, and friends who make them want to come back.

One year of RDRC 🫶

If you had told me just over a year ago that I’d start a run group in my neighbourhood, and that a year later we’d be thriving and building community through movement, I wouldn’t have believed you.

A year ago, I was in one of the darkest places of my life with my mental health. Keeping to myself was the easy thing to do. It’s amazing what a comment on a community group and encouragement from others can do; and that’s how RDRC was born.

I’m so grateful for this amazing crew: for those who’ve joined us for a run or two, and for the ‘core group’ that’s the heartbeat of the group and keeps this thing going.

It’s been a year of laughs, building friendships, trying new things, no-rain Wednesdays (🌳iykyk), summer popsicle runs, first-ever races, and personal bests.

Here’s to year two, and to continuing to build on what we’ve already started 🥂 by @katelynn.ramage

Did you know River District has its own running & walking club? In Issue 15 of @riverdistrictlivingmagazine Katelynn Ramage talks about her love of running and walking and how she created the River District Run & Walk Club to fill a need for deeper community connections through movement:

My name is Katelynn, and I’ve had the privilege of calling River District home for the past four years. What has always stood out to me about our community is how active and community focused it is. Over time, I noticed something missing: a group that could bring everyone together, not only to keep moving but to strengthen the bonds within the community. That’s when the idea for the River District Run & Walk Club was born.

For the past 15 years, running and walking have been at the core of my life. I’ve been fortunate to compete at a high level in track and field, both at university and as a member of Team BC and Team Canada. Through these experiences, I’ve met some of my closest friends, and the connections formed on those long runs and walks have always been something special. I realized that creating similar connections in River District could be a powerful way to build an even stronger community.

🗓️ Meeting every:

Wednesday & Thursday at 6:30 PM
Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM

Meeting place:
📍benches in front of Romer’s

Our weekday runs usually cover about 5 kilometers, while our weekend runs range from 5 to 10 km. We also have a walking group on the weekends that often includes a coffee or tea stop along the way.

As the group continues to grow, we have seasoned runners to those just starting out on their walking or running journeys. There’s a sense of camaraderie that makes everyone feel welcome, regardless of pace or experience level. If you’re interested in joining us or if you’d like to help lead a run, please feel free to reach out to me either through Instagram at @river.districtrunclub or email at katelynn.ramage@outlook.com

Thank you Katelynn for creating this wonderful group ❤️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

Then ➡️ Now

It's taken a bit to find the words for this one.

This past fall and winter felt like the best build of my life — things were finally starting to click.

It’s wild how quickly that can change.

There’s never a good time for an injury, but this one stung. And honestly, it just freaking sucks.

As an athlete, you don’t take the remarkable things your body does for granted — especially in your 30s. You start to realize how much you’ve asked of it — and how much it’s quietly done for you in return.

But I’m still here, taking it day by day. Rebuilding trust in my body, leaning into patience, and reminding myself that progress looks different right now. Every day I’m getting a little stronger. Healing — physically, mentally — and holding on to the day I get to lace up and get back on the road.

Talking about how things are going when they're going well is a heck of a lot easier than when they're not.

It's a lot easier to share the celebratory moments than the darker, vulnerable moments.

Things in sport haven't been bright and cheery for a while (slide to see my reality of the past few weeks, iykyk). This past weekend was (unfortunately) no different. There have been a lot of tears and time spent with @riverflowphysio and @avery_dawn.acu over the past month; I'm so proud of getting myself to the start line and giving it a go. On the flipside, not finishing the race broke my heart a lot.

I am so thankful and grateful to the amazing people behind me (especially @evandunfee and @performance1st.training ) who have constantly kept me grounded and trying to look forward on the dark days.

It's time to heal up and enjoy a few more weeks the season 🤍 by @katelynn.ramage
