POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I haven’t been able to surf lately because I’m recovering from an injury. So I’ve been mind-surfing on big drums and echo fuzz guitar.

I have a lot of little song pieces scattered across notebooks and drive folders. I struggle to finish anything because I’m my own worst critic. And as many of you can likely relate, just surviving can take up a lot of creative energy. So when is there even time to make stuff you love?

I found a little time and energy today so I made this reel. I hope you enjoy.

It started out as some guitar experiments and I had named the file, “Wings of Desire,” ‘cause I was watching a lot of Wim Wenders films at the time. I actually forgot that I called it that until after I pulled the bird footage. Funny how things just work out sometimes 🪽

In the attention economy, provocation is currency. And sometimes that provocation is good and helpful. But sometimes it’s like picking at a scab that won’t heal.

We should post about our rage against authoritarianism. Reshare videos of the world burning and data centers decimating the land. Anger and outrage are a healthy response to unprecedented times. And where else can we express that so easily than social media?

In his novel “I Hate the Internet,” Jarett Kobek writes, “The Illusion of the internet was the idea that the opinions of powerless people, freely offered, had some impact on the world. This was, of course, total bullshit.”

His nihilism might feel obnoxious. Because we want to believe that our petitions to recognize land rights, protect forests, and stop corruption will do something in this world. What else are we supposed to do? Scream into a pillow?

The internet is the most readily accessible tool for collective action. As long as we stay aware that it’s also a tool for collective control. The algorithm is a double edged sword. You can’t stop the gears of Meta, but you can still be a pain in the ass on Instagram.

To quote Donna Haraway from her 2016 book, “Staying with the Trouble“: “Our task is to make trouble, to stir up a potential response to devastating events, as well as to settle troubled waters and rebuild quiet places.”

So yeah, rage post. Doom scroll. Express yourself. Just stay aware that you’re playing with fire. As Melvin Kranzberg said, “technology is neither good nor bad. Nor is it neutral.”

Thanks for reading my thoughts 🖤

When I was younger, the 4th of July was always a big deal. Almost bigger than Christmas. A family cookout that lasted all day. Big fireworks display at night. Returning home a little sunburnt just to set off more fireworks while we made s’mores by a campfire. It was playful, joyous debauchery. And it was my favorite day of the year.

Independence Day is supposed to be a remembrance of what “liberty and justice for all” means. But today, those words feel performed. Like people say them, but they don’t live them.

America doesn’t really seem like a symbol of freedom anymore. Or maybe it never did, but when I was young I only knew the story I was told. And that’s the thing, the American project is a story with a debatable plotline. And for me, this is not a day of celebration. It’s a day of remembrance for the dark side of imperialism.

To quote Frantz Fanon, “Imperialism leaves behind germs of rot which we must clinically detect and remove from our land but from our minds as well.”

Rather than fireworks and hot dog eating contests, perhaps today should be about: supporting customary land rights, advocating for the Indigenous People’s Bill, protecting the environment, decolonizing your consumption, or unlearning Western-centric historical frameworks.

“What matters is not to know the world. But to change it.” - Frantz Fanon, from “Black Skin, White Masks”

In “The Second Sex”, Simone de Beauvoir writes, “The body is not a thing, it is a situation: it is our grasp on the world and our sketch of our project.”

This quote is punctuating a much larger philosophical framework than I have the space to unpack here. But more honestly, I’m not a philosopher. I’m just a pissed-off woman who’s tired of being objectified, belittled, and treated as second-class. So I’m just referencing de Beauvoir to make a point. And that point is that the female body is not a thing. It is a situation informed by history, culture, and context. All of which are ever-changing and constantly being redefined.

Read the full essay, “Women make natural anarchists”, where I explore what it means to rebel in a world that always wants women to be nice and pretty. Now live on my Substack. Link in bio 🔗

Joan Baez famously said, “Action is the antidote to despair.” But these days, it can be hard to know how to take action.

We live in AI slop, algorithmic bubbles of misinformation making it harder to separate fact from deep fake. I don’t usually post on here because it feels kind of dangerous or wasteful, of time and attention. But I’ve been wrestling with the idea of action since the war in Iran began. So fuck it, here’s an attempt at action.

I don’t really know how to take action in all the ways Joan Baez did. I don’t know how to demonstrate that I’m anti-war when the war itself seems like it was designed to distract us from a lot of other things going on. From the oligarchy and the tech giants making it harder for regular people to live a decent life. To the degradation of democracy, and free speech, and basic human rights. It’s like, where do I even begin?

As an expat living in a part of the world that will no doubt be more harshly affected by the economic fallout of this war, I also feel guilty. Guilty for being American. And for not being in America to protest like Joan Baez did against the war in Vietnam. For not being physically present with the countless other Americans who are against this war. For not being able to take action.

What is action though? Maybe protest looks different now than it did during Vietnam. Maybe protest is an accumulation of small, honest efforts. Maybe it starts with a post on Instagram that was in no way created by AI. Maybe protest is simply being aware—of how to fact check what you see in the media, how news is being suppressed in the Middle East, and how to look for truth amidst the lies.

Maybe action is the constant process of staying hopeful and human in a world that does not want you to be.

This post is a protest against the war in Iran.
