Mostly Tentacles

A few views of my works in the temporary space at Ostbahnhof, shown together with @katesteciw and Katharina Trudzinski.

The station was not a neutral place for this. It was slightly brutal, full of waiting, passing, luggage, fluorescent light and people half-orienting themselves. Which felt right.

My works here are trying, lacking and failing, to become bodies. Hard ceramic trying to behave like something soft. Cold material pretending it might have warmth, weight, feeling, fatigue. Printed surfaces and cut photographic elements sagging, no longer fully image, not quite object either.

I like that awkward place. The moment where something is almost readable, almost bodily, almost stable, and then slips away again.

In conversation with Kate’s moving photo-objects and Katharina’s architectural photographic interventions, the works felt less installed than temporarily caught. Like they had arrived there, but only for a moment.

OSMOS is pleased to present Kate Steciw: Pictures, the artist’s first solo show with the gallery, on view May 7th until June 27th. Please join us for the opening reception Thursday, May 7th, 6-8pm.

Kate Steciw’s practice is defined by a continual effort to cope with the perceptual crisis precipitated by image overload. There is a primal desire to make a mark, to assert herself somewhere in the unending stream of image data generated, shared or stored both personally and publicly. She is drawn to forgotten, authorless or “weak” images; the stock image used to signify anything from foot health to dish soap, images from Facebook Marketplace and special interest groups and the vast stores of her own personal images saved and resaved for reasons unknown over decades. Whether she’s working with editing software or by hand, Steciw layers and juxtaposes seemingly disparate images; to create pieces she refers to as “composites”. She intervenes (gently or aggressively, physically or digitally) to liberate herself, and the image from a prescribed context or convention and to propose new possibilities for interaction both between images as well as between images and their consumers/viewers. Decidedly “hand-made”, these paintings bear traces of their digital origins (a pixelated fragment, the hard circular edge of the “rubber stamp” tool). The scale and surface give weight to images that might otherwise be fleeting or disposable, inviting viewers to consider how meaning shifts when images are removed from their original context and forced into dialogue.

Please join me for the opening of my solo show “Pictures” @osmos.online

May 7, 6-8pm

OSMOS

“Recent works of collaged canvas prints return this gesture to the physical realm. Images printed on canvas and collaged onto wood panels use as few “moves” as possible. The work resists the complexity and density often associated with collage. The scale and surface give weight to images that might otherwise be fleeting or disposable. Decidedly “hand-made”, the works bear traces of their digital origins (a pixelated fragment, the hard circular edge of the “rubber stamp” tool) but further reduce the origins or context of any given image to irrelevance; what remains is the work’s ability to serve as a disorienting reference to something inevitably absent while creating a physical object that operates visually; a Picture.” - Christian Rattemeyer

I’m happy to invite you to Mostly Tentacles, a collaborative exhibition by @katesteciw, Katharina Trudzinski and myself.

The exhibition brings together three artists working across photography, collage, sculpture and painting. It takes place at Ostbahnhof, in a raw, temporary exhibition space inside the station, a setting that feels very fitting for the works: public, in-between, slightly unstable and full of passages.

The title borrows from Gelijktijdigheid, a poem by the Dutch writer M. Vasalis. In the poem, perception appears as something excessive and unwieldy: a reaching outward through too many “tentacles,” without ever fully arriving at the world it tries to know. What emerges is not mastery, but a sharpened awareness of the distance between seeing and understanding.

This condition runs through the exhibition. In the practices of de Joode, Steciw and Trudzinski, images are not flat or stable representations, but active, malleable materials. Digital image-data, photographic fragments, painterly gestures and sculptural forms are translated, compiled, stretched and displaced. Materials and systems do not simply represent perception, but mediate it. What is grasped remains partial, filtered and unstable.

The works in Mostly Tentacles do not resolve that gap. They inhabit it.
