SLC Half Marathon 🫶

I went into this race with a sub-2 goal, but the weeks leading up to it made me realize I could aim a little higher. I really wanted to beat my previous time by 30 minutes — and I did, finishing in 1:46:51. I’m beyond happy to have achieved that.

Also picked up a 10k, 15k, 10 mile and 20k PB along the way, and included one very real suffering pic to keep things honest (wish I had seen the camera 😅).

I’m currently still deep in recovery mode. My watch says 37 hours left, and my quads agree.

I’d love to race again later this year, but there’s a lot of change coming up soon… so we’ll see.

Day 7: Dawson Creek, BC → Fort Nelson, BC 🇨🇦

Day 7 marked the official start of our drive on the Alaska Highway, with 1523 miles (2451 km) still ahead of us to Fairbanks! Of course, we had to stop at the famous sign in Dawson Creek for some photos before hitting the road.

We hadn’t been driving for very long when we took a little detour to the historic Kiskatinaw Bridge, which is part of the original Alaska Highway. Built in 1942 and 1943, it was the first curved wooden bridge of its kind in Canada and is still standing today. It was bypassed in 1978 when the highway was rerouted, and it’s now closed to vehicles, but you can still walk across it and take in the views of the river valley below.

After that, we continued our drive through the British Columbia countryside toward Fort Nelson. It was a pretty quiet day on the road, and once we arrived, we picked up some groceries for breakfast the next morning and grabbed dinner before calling it an early night. After seven consecutive days on the road, we were definitely starting to feel the exhaustion! 😅

And while we joked about seeing a bear on our way out of the restaurant, we had no idea what the next day would have in store for us! 🐻🤭

Day 6: Hinton, AB → Dawson Creek, BC 🍂

We started the morning with a little detour to a beaver boardwalk. It’s known for being one of the longest freshwater boardwalks in the world, and even though we didn’t actually see any beavers, it was really interesting to see all the dams and structures they had built! 🦫

Then we hit the road to Dawson Creek, and the drive was absolutely gorgeous. The rolling hills, mountains, and fall colors made this one of my favorite drives of the trip so far.

Once we crossed into British Columbia, we gained an extra hour thanks to the time zone change, which meant we arrived in Dawson Creek just after 3 PM and had the whole afternoon to explore!

We walked around downtown a little, and even had time to go for a run, which felt SO good after spending so many hours in the car.

We also made a quick Walmart stop to stock up on some Canadian goodies. 🇨🇦 We picked up a bottle of maple syrup, which actually worked out cheaper per ounce than what we’d pay in the US, even though we chose the most expensive bottle. And I had to grab a bag of Haribos! The Canadian version is actually the same as the original German version, made with sugar and natural colors instead of the corn syrup and artificial colors used in the US. And trust me, if you grew up eating German Haribos, you know there’s a difference!

We ended the day at Post & Brew Taphouse with some great beers and amazing food. Such a perfect way to spend our last evening before the next big part of the journey!

Because tomorrow, we were finally starting our drive on the Alaska Highway, all the way to Fairbanks!

Day 5: Calgary, AB → Hinton, AB 🇨🇦

After our failed search for a Montana mug the day before, we had one mission before leaving Calgary: find a Canada mug. Luckily, this time we found one at the very first Starbucks we stopped at!

Then we made our way to the gates of Banff National Park, and the scenery immediately started getting better and better. 🏔️

Unfortunately, we had left a little too late that morning to still find parking at Lake Louise, so we had to skip it and continue on to the other stops we had planned. And honestly, everything we saw was still absolutely gorgeous!

We didn’t have time for a hike again since we were short on time and still had to make it all the way to Hinton that night. I definitely want to come back to Banff someday with more time to actually explore it instead of just driving through and stopping at viewpoints.

Eventually, we made our way into Jasper National Park and continued toward the Columbia Icefield area, where we stopped for lunch. The food was actually surprisingly good, and the views were even better.

As we continued through Jasper, one of the hardest parts was seeing the areas affected by thewildfires. The amount of land that was completely burned was honestly difficult to comprehend. You can see the damage in photos, but seeing it stretch across such huge areas in person is something else entirely. 💔

Eventually, we made it to Hinton, where we spent the night. Next, we will continue north toward the start of the iconic Alaska Highway!

Day 4: Kalispell, MT → Calgary, Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦

When we stepped outside that morning, it was just above freezing, and I was honestly so happy to finally have some crisp fall weather!

We only wanted to make one quick @starbucks stop to look for a Montana mug for our collection, but that somehow turned into three Starbucks stops, and we didn’t find one at any of them.

Then we made our way through Glacier National Park, and wow! It was absolutely gorgeous. We stopped at so many viewpoints, took way too many photos, and just enjoyed driving through the park.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time for any hikes since we still had to make it all the way to Calgary that day. I’d definitely love to come back another time with more time to explore and actually hike through the park.

After leaving the park and grabbing a late lunch, we made our way to the Canadian border. 🇨🇦 Thankfully, crossing went smoothly, and we continued on to Calgary with an obligatory @timhortons stop. When in Canada! We had dinner, checked into our hotel, and got some much-needed rest before the next day’s adventure through Banff and Jasper National Parks.

We got married through double proxy while we were living in Germany, so neither of us was physically in Montana for our wedding. 🤍

Three years and a few months later, we finally made it to the courthouse where it all happened. Standing there together and taking photos in front of the place where we officially became husband and wife was such a surreal full circle moment.🥹

If you’ve never heard of double proxy marriage, Montana allows it when one party is a Montana resident or a member of the U.S. armed forces on federal active duty. That’s how we were able to get married in Montana while living overseas.

Military life definitely comes with some unconventional wedding stories, and this is ours.

Did you have a (military) wedding story that looked a little different from the traditional one?

Day 3: Ogden, UT → Kalispell, MT 🏔️

Our longest driving day of the trip! We left Ogden at 6 AM while it was still dark and spent most of the day on the road. We stopped for coffee twice and even made our own lunch on the side of the road in Montana!

It was noticeably colder than Utah, and we could definitely feel that we were getting further north! 🥶

Kalispell was a particularly special stop for us because this is where our marriage certificate was issued three years ago. We were actually in Germany at the time and had a double proxy marriage. This means neither of us had to be physically present for the ceremony, and someone stood in for each of us. Montana only allows double proxy marriages for Montana residents and active-duty military, which is why we were able to do ours there.

So of course, we had to stop by the courthouse where our marriage certificate was issued and take some photos. Apparently, everyone driving by thought we had just gotten married because we got SO many honks! Then, completely unexpectedly, a couple of women stopped when they saw us. They had cameras with them and offered to take some photos of us!

We’re still waiting to see the photos, but it was such a sweet and unexpected moment. We ended the day with a really good dinner and went to bed with very full hearts. 🤍

And next up are the national parks!🏔️🌲

Day 2: Blanding, UT → Ogden, UT 🏔️

After a very short night in Blanding, we were back on the road to Salt Lake City. We stopped for coffee in Moab, grabbed lunch in SLC, and did a little shopping at Boot Barn, but the highlights of the day were getting back on my favorite trail, the one I used to run on almost every day when we lived in Utah, even if it was only for a little walk, and getting to see my friend again! 🤍

It made this stop in Salt Lake City feel a little extra special knowing we were leaving the next morning and wouldn’t be back for a while.

Day 1: Sierra Vista, AZ → Monument Valley, UT

Everything was going exactly as planned… until we set up our tent and realized everything inside was covered in sand.😅

We ended up driving another 1.5 hours and finding a hotel in Blanding, UT. So if you’re thinking about tent camping in Monument Valley, maybe think twice!

Unfortunately, this meant we didn’t get to see Monument Valley after all, but I’m sure we’ll be back another time.

Saguaro National Park was only 1.5 hours from where we’ve been living for the last few months while my husband was in training, so even though it’s still way too hot in Arizona and not exactly the ideal season to visit, we had to go. 🌵

The cacti were SO cool, and I’d love to come back one day when it’s cooler and we can explore more of the park. It’s crazy to think about how old some of these saguaros are when they only grow about 1–1.5 inches per year.

For now, I’m enjoying these last few days of warm weather before we start our drive up to Alaska. The temperatures will probably drop a little more with every mile north. ❄️

I’m so excited for this road trip and already know it’s going to be GORGEOUS! Stay tuned for more national park, road trip, and Alaska content! 🏔️🚙 taken in Saguaro National Park, Tucson by @katha.runs
