Shoulders lifting with every inhale?

Your diaphragm plays a key role in breathing, but it also works together with your deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor to regulate intra-abdominal pressure and support core stability.

When breathing isn’t optimal, these muscles may not work together as effectively.

That’s why deep core training isn’t just about stronger abs. It’s about training the system behind them.

Shoulder lifting alone doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong, but it can be a sign that your breathing pattern needs attention. 👀 by @kathrinhnn

One of the most important things to learn is that it‘s not about you. It never is. 💎 by @kathrinhnn

Combine a soft tissue massage and skin rolling around your lower rib cage to release tension and improve mobility.

- This can give your rib cage more room to move, making breathing feel easier and less restricted.
- It can also make the area around your lower ribs and upper abdomen look less tight and pushed out.

At first, the tissue might feel quite sensitive, and you may not be able to get very far beneath your ribs. That’s okay. Start gently and give it time.

Just a minute a day. 😌🫶🏼 by @kathrinhnn

Having strong, visible abs is great. But how much weight you can lift or what you see in the mirror doesn’t tell the whole story.

It’s also about stability, control and how you use your breath to manage pressure, from heavy lifts to everyday life.

And a lot of that comes down to teamwork. 🤝

Your abs, back muscles, diaphragm and pelvic floor all play a part. The better they work together and adapt to different demands, the more you can get out of your core.

More control. Better coordination. And more confidence in what your body can do. by @kathrinhnn

It started when I added breathwork & hypopressives to my training:

I feel more stable through movement and under load.

I’ve improved mobility through my rib cage and my breathing feels less restricted.

I’ve gained better control over how I hold and carry my midsection.

My waistline became more defined and my posture feels more natural.

If you train hard, it’s easy to think your core just needs to get stronger.

For me, learning to work with it differently made the bigger difference. And that’s exactly why it has become part of my routine. 🌬️⚡️ by @kathrinhnn

If 3D rib cage breathing is hard to feel, a little tactile feedback can make a big difference.

Your hands help you sense the movement of your lower ribs, especially around the sides and back, where the breath can be harder to notice.

Why does that matter?

Better rib cage awareness can help you:
- gain more control over your breathing
- coordinate your breath and core more intentionally
- get a better sense of how you manage pressure through your trunk

As you inhale, feel your ribs expand into your hands.
As you exhale, feel them gently recoil.

Sometimes better core control starts with simply being able to feel what’s moving.

Hug yourself to wake up your rib cage mechanics. 😊 by @kathrinhnn

I never would have thought I’d one day be posing in a bikini…

Two years between these photos.
Two years since my path changed.

And what I’ve learned is that you’re never stuck with who you are.

You can discover something you never knew you wanted.
You can choose a path you never saw yourself taking.
You can set goals that would have surprised the old you.

And the beauty of it is, you can do all of this as many times as you want.

Sometimes all it takes is deciding that where you are today doesn’t have to be where you stay.

Never stop being curious about what’s possible.
I know I won’t. 🤘✨ by @kathrinhnn

Holding your breath during an exercise isn’t always a bad thing.

A brief, intentional breath-hold can help create stability.

But holding your breath also increases internal pressure, which puts more load on your pelvic floor and abdominal wall.

That’s one thing for a heavy rep. Constantly holding your breath throughout your workout without even realizing it is another.

Fortunately, you can achieve that same stability a different way.

Breathing into the rib cage while you move keeps you supported without relying on a breath-hold. It allows your core to do its job without creating more pressure than necessary.

Less pressure. More control. 🏋️‍♀️✌️ by @kathrinhnn

When we talk about the core, we usually think about muscles and their strength, stability and control.

But there’s way more going on in your midsection than that.

Digestion is one of those things we rarely connect to the way our core feels, functions and, of course, looks. Bloating, constipation and straining can all change what’s happening inside the abdominal cavity.

That’s when a little belly massage goes a long way. 🤲

It’s one of the simple things I use to support my digestion and relieve some of that pressure. Gentle clockwise strokes follow the general direction of the colon and stimulate the bowels to keep things moving.

Because taking care of your core goes beyond working the muscles. by @kathrinhnn

Most of us wouldn’t start lifting heavy without warming up first.

We move our joints, activate our muscles, do a few lighter sets.

But one thing is often completely left out: breathing.

And considering how much our breathing changes once the weights get heavy, I think it deserves some attention too.

Before I train, I like to spend a few minutes focusing on my breath. How my ribcage moves, how well I can expand it, and how my core responds.

It’s simple. It doesn’t take long. But for me, it creates a completely different awareness before I start loading my body.

So next time you warm up, start with your breath. 🫁 by @kathrinhnn
