Must See! Review:

Let's face it. It's pretty dang rare for a show to be genuinely funny, and as if the business of comedy weren't hard enough, we live in a cultural climate that seems to side more often with those who arrested Lenny Bruce than the people who called for his release. One thing we're happy to report, though, is there's a play currently running at Paradise Factory that is funny, genuinely funny, and it's sure to provide you with a fun, care-free evening.

Sunny Zimmerman's kooky, zany play about Lyndon B. Johnson is a hoot. Set in a middle school classroom on the day that you go to see the show, LBJ: The Play will have you chuckling even before it begins as you read the classroom posters that decorate the naturalistic set. The idea is that a middle school teacher, played by the convincingly anxious Katie Davis, is trying to teach her class - you, the audience - about the 1960's, so she hires an LBJ performer to demonstrate. There's some education that occurs, but mostly what unfolds is a slapstick gag-athon where you'll be perfectly content wondering what Sunny Zimmerman, Albert Muzquiz and Soraya Perry are capable of next, capable being the key word here. These actors don't get a break and boy do they earn the laughs they get.

Is this show a bit scrunched into the downstairs of Paradise Factory? Sure. Is it sometimes unclear whether something falling over is intended or accidental? Maybe. But what matters is there's enough working here that it doesn't drag and there's enough genuine laughter to make for a great evening. The never-ending costume changes combine with real comedic chops to create moments of laugh-out-loud funny as big as LBJ's… johnson.

There are some nice points made about identity, but mostly this show is just a damn good time. A genuinely fun and funny night at the theater.

7:30pm: Good Time Country Buffet, 166 1st Ave.
If you can get in, you should start your night at Good Time Country Buffet, where, for only $26.99, you can eat all you want of southern classics like meatloaf, collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken.

9:00pm: LBJ: The Play, Paradise Factory, 64 E 4th St.
Then head to Paradise Factory to to catch one of LA Times' favorite shows at the 2024 Netflix is a Joke Festival! It's also presented by Jo Firestone and co-directed by Andrew Barth Feldman, so you KNOW it's going to be hysterical! A 5th grade teacher hires local performer Sunny Zimmerman to give a simple historical presentation as LBJ. The only problem? Sunny’s gone method. They’ve been living and breathing as LBJ, and LBJ has decided that this is his one chance to salvage his legacy – with an ambitious theatrical production. As his vision doesn't go according to plan, the boundaries between actor and role become increasingly blurred. This is one of the shows we're excited for this month!

10:30pm: B Scene, 50 Avenue B
After the show, walk over to Alphabet City to grab drinks at B Scene, a hip new cocktail lounge with live music!

(LBJ: The Play runs through 10/30, and a lot of performances are already sold out, so get your tickets now!) taken in East Village, Manhattan by @katield

Who knows what the hell this lady teacher with big chompers is teaching these kids. I can tell ya it sure ain’t anything useful, like funneling dirty oil money or shakin’ people to get what ya want out of ‘em. God help this nation’s brightest young minds...

Katie Davis is a comedian and writer from Savannah, GA, based in Los Angeles. Most recently, she originated the role of “Julie” in Caitlan Moore’s BABY DICK, a three-hander that premiered at The Elysian in July 2026. She’s excited to take on the role of Creative Producer for this Fall 2026 run of LBJ: THE PLAY. You can catch her being ridiculous on DR. G AND DONNA LEE, a parody daytime talk show live-streamed on Twitch, or follow her on Instagram @katield by @katield

What’s the only thing harder than being president? Mounting an off-Broadway run of your original play. Those big city theater folks aren’t pullin’ punches! They can actually be quite hurtful…

But we’re gonna show them! For all of October, we’ll be doing my original play on Manhattan’s Lower East Side! For those non-New Yorkers, Manhattan is the most phallic of the boroughs.

But before we can make that happen, I need to do something that for a man is even harder than being president or mounting a play: asking for help. We can’t make it to NYC without your support!

Join me on the trail at the link in bio or at tinyurl.com/lbjcampaign and follow for updates. Tickets coming soon to a district near you.
