I’ve started writing this post about 100 times and just couldn't post. I AM CANCER FREE. Nine months ago, I was diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer. I remember how quickly my life divided itself into two parts: before cancer & after cancer. Before cancer my anxiety had power...taunting me to focus on shit that just doesn't matter & then someone tells you that you have cancer and suddenly the noise stops. I was terrified...not of surgery or chemotherapy, but of not being here. I would look at Otis and think about the possibility that I might not be here for his future. I didn’t want Dave to have to do this without me. So I pushed through the fear and did the next thing. I had a double mastectomy, another surgery for a hematoma, a port, chemo, and reconstruction. I cold-capped to keep my hair, but lost most of it anyway. I swelled, gained weight, and was exhausted. And just when chemo was over, my brows and lashes decided to fall out too. Ugh. I always thought strength meant handling things and showing up for everyone else. Cancer didn’t give me that option. Sometimes strength was letting someone else take care of me. I experienced an extraordinary amount of kindness...from loved ones, but also from people I barely knew. People showed up. They listened when I was scared and were willing to simply BE THERE. Dave CARRIED OUR FAMILY, keeping the train on the tracks and taking care of Otis and me. He went through this too. But Otis still needed his mom. Cancer didn’t stop school, tutoring, piano lessons, summer fun and ordinary things that make up our family. I used to think important moments were the big ones; cancer taught me that an uneventful Monday with the people you love may actually be the whole point.
Eventually chemo ended, reconstruction was done, my lymph nodes were clear, and my test came back negative. NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE. People talk about getting back to normal, but there isn’t really a back. I would never call cancer a gift-there were silver linings EVERYWHERE, but it did strip away the bullshit. It showed me how deeply I am loved and that my life didn't have to become extraordinary-it already was. I am here. ❤️#breastcancersurvivor by @katiemaringer

So grateful to have been onset this past weekend in LA…first job since the “big f@&*ing C and being CANCER FREE!
I am beyond grateful to have been surrounded by incredibly talented and hilariously brilliant cast and crew…just all around GOOD HUMANS:). It’s a super secret, so you’ll have to wait until the end of the year!🎄🤶🎬🎥🩷💃🏻🌈🌦️🚈🌧️✈️👯
And it all ended with some quality time with my KL and the other “Unstable Mabel”.

Final surgery today. ❤️

I cannot thank you all enough for your continued love and support throughout these last six months of my cancer journey.

Through your prayers, messages, gifts, donations to my GoFundMe, meals, and even the simplest love notes, I have felt so incredibly supported. I am truly blessed. Friends and family are everything.

Today marks the end of this chapter, and I couldn’t be more grateful. While I never would have chosen this path, cancer has brought unexpected silver linings…deeper gratitude, stronger relationships, a new perspective, and so so so much love. 🩷

I can’t wait to move forward and embrace this next chapter with more joy, better health, more love…and hopefully some new gutters for the house. 😂

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every single one of you for carrying me through this. I love you all.

Love deeply. Find joy wherever you can. And keep on keepin’ on. ❤️ Katie

Feeling pretty good two days after chemo:). Got to see my little Odie in his Bible School performance:). Thank you @dr_quinn for my fabulous bandana! I’ve become obsessed with this brand - bought eight more since I’ll be sporting these for the near future as my hair grows back:). @handker_bandanas by @katiemaringer

My last chemo treatment! Thank you so much for all the love and support. It’s not over yet, but I can now move forward with more energy and hopefully speedy hair growth:)

A very special thank you to my entire team at Endeavor Health! And an extra special shoutout to my nurse, Erin. She is what true superheroes are made of…her grace, kindness and compassion helped me moved through my treatments feeling safe and truly loved.

When I started chemotherapy, I wanted to try cold capping. I told myself that if I started getting bald spots on top, I’d just shave my head - it’s JUST HAIR, right? And yes, it will grow back. But I remembered the time that I cut bangs during a TV commercial of “Pushing Daisies” because Anna Friel’s hair was just the BEST and regretted it a second later. 🤦🏻‍♀️. It took me a year to get it back to the length I wanted it…my impulsive nature does not always serve me. 😂💇🏻‍♀️😩

I’ve gotten used to the scarves - wore them all the time in my 90’s era - I’m just bringing it back:). But sometimes, you just miss your hair.

Thank you to @sharsheretofficial and the organizations that help women feel like themselves again during treatment. What may seem like “just hair” can mean so much more.

And a special thank you to @rachel.p.sanders for going with me and being my partner on this journey, and to the incredibly talented wizard, Roza at @teddyrosehairsalon for making my hairpiece. She’s a MASTER.

I got a little piece of myself back. ❤️
