Unpopular opinion, incoming.

Please stop believing that ‘self-care’ is going to undo all the damage that a stressful business or a shitty job does to you.

Society wants you to believe that so the people selling the self-care services/products can keep making money off your stress and so the employers and clients can keep getting their pound of flesh.

It’s b*llocks.

Yes, a face mask feels nice (I love them).

Yes, mediation can be great to settle a mind.

Yes. exercise is a brilliant way to switch off (again, BIG gym fan and my brain won’t work without it)...

But literally, no amount of these things will counter chaotic biz or a toxic work environment.

So, instead of coveting that fancy face cream and dropping cash on yet another self-help book that probably wouldn’t help much even if you read it (👀I see that pile of unread books👀)…

I encourage you to look at the foundations of the way you work instead.

Want to know what they are?

My blog has you covered.

My intention for 2023 was to do less (this is a continual challenge for me, and something I really must manage 😂) so I could have more:

- rest
- brain space
- creativity
- movement
- relationships

And looking back over my camera reel has left me feeling pretty freaking happy.

I moved on land, in water and in the gym, gently. No big milestones to hit, just for it to feel good and be consistent (I use a wall 'star chart' to help with that and it's a game changer - keeps me consistent and also stops me overdoing it 😂)

I've created in the kitchen, on paper, with flowers and even created a little pottery 'studio' in the garage. My belly and home decor are as happy as me. 🏠

I've built beautiful relationships with new people that mean the absolute world to me. Creating deep connections is so grounding ❤️

And I realised that the last 3 things give me the first 2 as well.

I feel rested when I create. I also rest better when I move. Strong connections with people I trust and admire help me feel safe so my brain feels calm.

All this to say that you can be your goal in 2024.

Being calm, being still, maintaing what you've got, whatever it is you need - that can be your focus.

Of course, you can shoot for new things and professional goals, but you don't have to. But you might find that by prioritising yourself those happen naturally - because you will be at your best. ✨

Anyway, please don't get sucked in by all the new year noise...

Reflect on 2023.
Ask yourself what felt good?
Then do more of that.

What will you make more space for in 2024? ❤️

....

Ps sorry to those peope I missed out. 🙈 Not always so great with taking pics when socialising and/or they are NSFW 😂 taken in Sitges by @katiephill

"I wanna do what makes me happy and f*ck the rest"

I couldn't have been prouder when I heard these words came from my client, a life long people pleaser, in our session yesterday.

Hearing and seeing her come back from burnout and really change the way she lives and works has been so ❤️

We have worked together for a year or so (6 months intensive then once a quarter since) and together we have levelled up her business by:

- getting rid of sh*tty clients that stressed her out
- taking control of her time so she has space to rest
- increasing her income by making sure she charges her worth and ensuring has a time and money buffer built into her planning
- improved her working processes to make the most of hers and her teams efforts
- and a whole load of other things that are too long for this post....

And as chuffed as I am to see all this happen, whitnessing her put her needs and happiness first was a total *chefskiss* moment.

Bloody love working with incredible women like this. Privledged to play a part in her world ❤️

It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.

It takes courage to say no to a crammed diary in a culture where unstructured time is considered lazy.

It takes courage to reset the way you work in a culture that glorifies burnout.

But I know that you are courageous.

And I know that you are brave.

And I know that you will feel so much better when you lean into rest and play.

❤️

Summer hols are coming and judging by my DMs that means we are knackered and desperate to forget work completely, forever…

And/Or….

Knackered and desperate to come out the other side of the break with new ways of balancing life, work and wellbeing.

Now, I’m going to be clear - first and foremost - I think that hols should really be about switching off.

That being said, ya know that I am also about us all finding more effective and less stressful ways to work.

And, as you voted on stories for book recos on “smarter of ways of working” I am sharing these with you.

Also, (ALSO!!!!) I am trusting that you lovely lot will be sure to get in plenty of R&R before reading them!

So, here are some one that I think are pretty helpful, that I reference with clients, and that I use in my own work when managing projects, making decision, and just generally trying to keep my s*t together.

Also, given you a quick summary so you get the gist of them. ✨

Now, I don’t necessarily love the style of writing in all of them but the info, tools and tips in them are good.

More recos on ‘burnout recovery’ and ‘nice reads’ will follow, but not today. There is wine to drink - full disclosure, I already made a start!

Here ya go:

1️⃣ Essentialism by McKeown:
Essentialism teaches you to focus by eliminating distractions and saying "no" to non-essential tasks.

By prioritizing your efforts on the most vital things, you’ll create room for increased productivity and a lot more joy. 💡TL,DR: It's not about doing it all or more, but doing what matters.

2️⃣ Make Time by Knapp and Zerasky:
Crammed calendars is v much an issue I see with clients. It’s a total head f*ck - sucking time, energy and happiness from your day. ‘Make Time’ provides practical strategies to reclaim control over your time and boost your productivity (aka leave you space to breathe, pee, poo, eat, move, etc. etc…)

What a difference a year makes.

This time last year I was:

🤨 Torn about choosing where to live.
🤨 Worried that we'd not find something we liked/could afford.
🤨 Concerned about rebuilding my community after moving cities
🤨 Apprehensive about accepting a full time job offer after building up my biz
🤨 Unsure how I'd manage my biz and full time job
🤨 Scared I'd have no time for all the things I know my brain needs to feel good: movement, creativity and rest.

But in the last week:

♥️ I celebrated my birthday in a home I love
♥️ Danced my socks off in a town that feels like home
♥️ Was surrounded with new (and extremely generous) friends that feel like they have been in my life for a very long time already
♥️ Worked on big, complex, international projects with brilliant colleagues
♥️ Coached clients, old and new, who I continue to help level up their work and keep burnout at bay
♥️ And I moved, indoors and out in nature and created in multiple ways (check out @_c.r.eo for my recent ceramics stuff). And I even managed a nap! 💤

Of course, not all weeks are like this. And this certainly didn't happen all at once. I've chipped away at this over the last 12 months - and it wasn't plain sailing.

There have been times where I've been knackered, grumpy and overwhelemed, and days where I second guess whether I'm making the right choices at the right time. But that's all part of it - reflection, growth, taking scary action.

Second guessing yourself isn't always "self sabotage" or "imposter syndrome" as so many of these little squares want us to believe.

Sometimes it's the best way to make sure you're putting time and energy into things that align with your values, keep you sane and get you where you want in the long term.

That's all the wisdom I can muster up after this weekends antics. (Yes, I know its Tuesday and I still feel fragile.)

Here’s to another rotation around the sun. ☀️

Here's to 39! 🥂
