I wanted to share a little introduction, for all of you who so kindly follow my work here. Thanks for being here! #washingtondcartist #motherartist #artiststatement #aboutme by @katiewalls_collage

I invite you to get to know me a little better by understanding what I make, and why. It’s not always easy as an artist to articulate whats going on in our heads when we make our work. Sometimes it’s pretty nebulous and frankly, doing the work is how we come to understand what it is and why we are doing it. That’s a slow process. That is why we might struggle sometimes to explain. #creativeprocess #artiststatement #artistmother #artpractices by @katiewalls_collage

The final “installment” of my introduction series: where to see my work and how to work with me! Consider a studio visit (there is no ven a Zeke’s coffee under my studio!). Come to a gallery show. Consider commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece with exactly the palette and size you need for your space. Join me for an in-person art class. Art is for everyone - I love helping others hold time and space to see art, talk about art, make art… and I have a little email newsletter to stay connected if that appeals to you! The link to sign up is in my bio, and if you do sign up there just might be a little gift for you too. Thank you for following my account and please stay informed touch. #artistintroduction #motherartist #artforsalebyartist❤️ #supportlivingartists #maketimeforart #artclassesindc #dcartscene by @katiewalls_collage

Original art
Made by a living breathing woman
In a studio above a coffee shop
Reliving every wander she’s ever taken outdoors
Every color that shot joy straight into her veins
Every love, worry, question, curiosity, rage, peace, or power

And you can have one.

Getting the background just right before moving on to the next layer of this piece… something-something-cottonwood leaves-something-something by @katiewalls_collage

For another year, my art practice will be supported by a significant grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities @thedcarts. The practical support means I will continue to have studio space and materials to create new work and offer community art classes. And on a deeper level, the vote of confidence from the Commission encourages me on the days that ideas are slow to come, or other opportunities don’t quite pan out. I am committed to speaking through my artwork, and deeply grateful to live in a community that values and supports its artists. 🙏🏼

In the past year, my grant from the Commisson has enabled me to maintain studio space, purchase materials, and pursue classes that expand my thinking and processes. Work I have made with this support has been in multiple shows including She:DC (@thisismadeindc) and Femme Art Fair (@femmeartfair). Several paintings and original collages have become part of others’ personal collections. And my work around wilderness and public lands has opened doors of advocacy for conservation. 🏞️

In the year ahead I hope to secure an exhibition for one or more bodies of work and attend a residency. I’ll also continue leading community collage classes. 🖌️✂️👩🏻‍🎨 #intentions #artistpractice #artistgrants #keepgoing by @katiewalls_collage

I think choosing art is a little like choosing the things you love most in life. You’re drawn to certain colors, shapes, textures, and feelings—and sometimes you can’t quite explain why.

The art we bring into our homes reflects our tastes, our curiosities, and the things that make us feel most like ourselves. It’s less about matching your decor and more about finding something that speaks to you.

So, what does your art pair well with? 🌿

Art speaks to who we are - the right artwork for you will resonate with you on many levels. 🏜️

The paintings I create speak to people who connect with the outdoors, and love rich color and interesting designs in their homes. 🏞️

My Desert West Collection is for everyone who daydreams of getting back to the desert. 🌵 by @katiewalls_collage

In November of 2024, created this painting which is a kind of visual memory - my term for the kinds of amalgams my mind builds of landscapes I love. I have memories of western rivers in moonlight. I have memories of desert canyons. I have imagined visuals of the seeps within sandstone that carry water through mineral darkness for months or years until it emerges along a cliff face and feeds a tiny garden of fern and mosses. I have seen stars scattered in infinite layers across a night sky. 🌌

In some regions of the world, people have given names to each of the year’s full moons. November’s is the Beaver Moon - named maybe for the industrious beaver who has prepared her environment and her home for the harsher season ahead or maybe for the time of year that human hunters could count on trapping beavers whose winter coats had thickened and would warm their own homes and children. In some Native traditions, the beaver was mankind’s first teacher in the ways of transforming nature into habitable and ecologically productive places. The beaver is also a lesson in the destructive power of extractive capitalism and (thankfully) in the resilience of animals when people choose to collaborate rather than clutch. 🦫🌳

My time road-tripping and camping in the American west has deepened my belief in the interconnection of all things, and how important it is for humans to have access to - and avail ourselves of - wilderness. My Desert West Collection is about that. “Beaver Moon” is a 24x24 inch painting on wooden panel. It’s for people who love the outdoors, know the magic of canyon country, and appreciate a midcentury aesthetic in the artwork you choose for your home. by @katiewalls_collage
