This is Maps.

She’s a bioartist and geneticist who grew up in the South Bay, 80+ years in the future. She works at the Coastal Science Center in Palos Verdes, where biology, art and technology have become increasingly difficult to separate. Her work involves genetically designing and modifying living organisms, sometimes for function, sometimes for beauty, and often for both. So if you’re wondering about the strange shark, that’s part of her world.

Back in 2022, when I first started experimenting with image-generating AI, I wrote about how exciting it would be if individual artists could someday make work that once required entire companies.

Four years later, I’m realizing we’re already there.

This past week, a massive production took over my apartment building. 300+ crew members, trucks, equipment, an enormous machine working together to make a music video.

Meanwhile, I was upstairs on my laptop making this.

Those two things are not equivalent, and I don’t think one has to replace the other. But regardless of where you fall politically on AI, there is something extraordinary about what this means for creative freedom.

An individual artist can now build worlds, characters, music and images that once required resources completely out of reach.

I had actually finished the opening scene of MAPS already. Then the technology changed so quickly that, within months, it started to feel dated.

So I’m starting again.

But this time I’m going to bring you along for the process.

I’ll start with some of the key frames and turn them into simpler scenes so you can begin getting to know Maps, the characters around her, and the world they live in while I figure out how to make this film with tools that are changing underneath my feet.

I’ve been thinking about ways to bring AI into conversation with traditional art, and this feels like a way to amplify a painter’s message while mixing in my own interpretation: how I experience their work and the worlds I see within it.

Thinking of making this a series: art about art. Introducing artists to new audiences, etc. 🤘🏻
