I recently finished a commission for a daughter who wanted to honor her father’s memory. M and I went to her father’s house and came back with a box full of his precious memories. It was such an honor to be trusted with them.

Working on this piece was both cathartic and healing. It pushed me to confront my own unresolved grief over losing my stepdad and the regrets I still carry. Both of their names were Jim, and when I got the email from his daughter, Nina, it felt like fate.

Grief comes in waves, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from this experience, it’s the importance of staying present-with my family, friends, and loved ones. In the end, all we have are memories. And what better way to make them eternal than through art?

-

For the past month I’ve been in the Ann Lowe Summer Intensive program by the @fashionforallfoundation . Needless to say, it’s been kicking my ass!! In the best way possible lol. A lot of making, thinking, experimenting, and pushing myself creatively. Creating things I never thought I would.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity to be a sponge and learn about fashion, how to navigate the art and fashion world, and what it takes to achieve my dreams.

These are just a few BTS moments of making, discovering, and being inspired.

If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t texted back, this is why. And if you need me for the next 3 weeks, don’t 😂 by @katmcollage

A little look at my process behind Skyscrapers.

Jay wanted to touch on heavy themes without making the cover feel heavy.

I hand-wove the background to represent the tension between moving forward and still feeling held back by pieces of the past. The rest of the cover is layered with symbols pulled from his story and the album.

Still processing Miami Immersive Intensive, but these are the three questions I’m leaving with.

Honestly, I didn’t fully know what I was signing up for lol but I felt called to apply and I’m really glad I did. What a dope experience.

One workshop had us recreate a memory by building a scene and acting it out. Another, a projection mapping workshop, had us using collage to understand how images communicate ideas and tell stories. Somewhere between the two, something clicked.

I’ve always thought about my work through collage. But through my music collaborations and personal collections, I’ve found myself becoming more interested in building worlds and thinking about how people experience a story, not just observe it.

I left with some new frameworks, a notebook full of ideas, and a lot to sit with. Excited to see where these questions lead ✨

I started listening to reggaeton in middle school. Ivy Queen was one of the first artists for me. You know that feeling when you haven’t experienced your first heartbreak yet, but you’re singing at the top of your lungs like you have? Lol, that was me. When I finally went through my first heartbreak in high school, she got me through it all. @ivyqueendiva
