Hey guys, I’m Kani, one half of Katø.

We thought it would be a nice idea to introduce our individual styles and give you a better idea of what makes us different and what we each bring to the booth when we play together as Katø.

So we each decided to record our own set, giving you a more personal look into the music that shaped us and the sounds we’re drawn to.

I grew up on 90s hip-hop, jazz and deep house, and I think you can still hear those influences in the way I approach music today. I’m drawn to groove, playful vocals, rolling basslines and tracks with character. Expect a mix of deep and tech house, with a little bit of swing and soul running through it.

For me, it’s always about the groove and the feeling a track gives you. I love music that can make a room move without having to force the energy.

So, let me take you on a little journey through the music I really dig.

There’s obviously a lot more to it, but this should give you a pretty good idea of what I love to hear and what I love to play.

Behind Katø — Part 4: Influences & Inspiration

KEVIN 👤

Q: Which artist influenced the way you build a set?
“There are several, but if I had to choose, I’d say Dungeon Meat, Shonky and Kerri Chandler. The way they blend groove, energy and personality has definitely shaped how I approach DJing.”

Q: If you could relive one DJ set live, which one would it be?
“Brawther and Kerri Chandler at Hal 16. This was back when SlapFunk had just started throwing parties in Utrecht. The vibe, the music, the crowd everything clicked that night.”

Q: Which artist do you keep coming back to, even outside the club?
“Horsemen, Khun and Warren Clarke. Their music has a timeless quality that keeps pulling me back, whether I’m preparing a set or just listening at home.”

Q: What music inspires you outside electronic music?
“A lot of Caribbean and Latin sounds. Soca, Bouyon, Salsa, Zouk and Kompa. The rhythms, percussion and energy in those genres influence the way I hear and select music.”

KANI 👤

Q: Which artist influenced the way you build a set?
“If I had to pick one artist, it would probably be Kerri Chandler. There are many DJs who influenced me, but he’s the one who made me fall in love with house music.”

Q: If you could relive one DJ set live, which one would it be?
“Trentemøller live at Awakenings Festival. The entire tent was bouncing. Absolutely insane energy from start to finish.”

Q: Which artist do you keep coming back to, even outside the club?
“Kolter. He’s got tracks for every mood. In my opinion, one of the most creative producers out there.”

Q: What music inspires you outside electronic music?
“90’s Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk and Disco. So much of today’s dance music is rooted in those genres.”

Q: What makes Kani the perfect partner in Katø?
“He pushes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me to hear records differently than I normally would. That constant exchange keeps our sound evolving.”

Q: What’s something Kani brings to the booth that you don’t?
“Sharpness, originality and a relaxed mindset. He always finds a way to keep things fresh without forcing it.”

Q: When are you truly in sync?
“When we’re dancing behind the decks and suddenly don’t need to say anything anymore. Sometimes one look is enough. That’s when we’re fully locked in and everything starts flowing naturally.”

Q: When did you realize Katø was more than just two friends playing music together?
“Honestly, from the very beginning. Whether we were practicing at his place or mine, the vibe was always there. When the idea came up to start something together, it felt like the most natural thing in the world.”

KANI 👤

Q: What makes Kevin the perfect partner in Katø?
“He exposes me to completely different sounds and ideas, forcing me out of my comfort zone. In the end, that’s what makes our styles complement each other so well.”

Q: What’s something Kevin brings to the booth that you don’t?
“Creativity in the mix. He’s great at knowing when a set needs something extra and uses effects in a way that adds energy without taking away from the music.”

Q: When are you truly in sync?
“When we stop overthinking and start freestyling. Some of our best moments happen when we let go of expectations, trust our instincts and mix completely in the moment.”

Q: When did you realize Katø was more than just two friends playing music together?
“After our set at NAR. The crowd was with us from start to finish and for the first time we really saw what we could create together. Pure magic.”

Q: What should people feel during your sets?
“Energy, emotion and the urge to keep dancing. If people forget about everything else for a while and fully surrender to the music, I've done my job.”

Q: What makes a track perfect for a Katø-set?
“A strong groove, a unique vibe and enough character to surprise people. The tracks that stay with you are usually the ones you didn't see coming.”

Q: What do you search for in music that many DJs miss?
“The feeling behind a track, not the hype around it. A great record doesn't need validation you feel it immediately.”

Q: When does a dancefloor feel truly locked in?
“When the crowd and the music become one and nobody wants the moment to end.”

KANI 👤

Q: What should people feel during your sets?
“I want people to be fully in the moment. Forget about everyday life, forget about their worries. Music should be felt, not just heard. And if it creates a moment of connection between strangers on the dancefloor, even better.”

Q: What makes a track perfect for a Katø-set?
“A steady groove, rough basslines and an element that makes you think: yo, I didn't expect that.”

Q: What do you search for in music that many DJs miss?
“Character. Every track tells a story and sometimes you only hear that story when you give it time. Some records reveal themselves slowly.”

Q: When does a dancefloor feel truly locked in?
“No phones, just movement and excitement. When people start chanting along, reacting to the build-ups and feeding energy back into the set.”

KEVIN 👤

Q: Who are you outside of Katø?
“I’m Kevin — one half of Katø. Outside of the music, I’m a partner, a father of three and a son.”

Q: What drives you in everyday life?
“Definitely my family. Every single day, I strive to show up as a better version of myself both for the people I love and for my own personal growth.”

Q: What’s something people wouldn’t expect about you?
“I actually love walking and running. It’s been on the back burner lately, but whenever I hit the pavement, it completely clears my head. It’s my way of disconnecting, getting lost in my thoughts, and finding that perfect sense of peace and accomplishment afterward.”

KANI 👤

Q: Who are you outside of music?
“I’m Kani — the other half of Katø. Outside of music, I’m a pretty laid-back guy. You’ll usually find me gaming, watching anime, bouldering, or spending quality time with my girl. I love things that let me completely switch off and disappear into another world for a bit.”

Q: What are you doing when nobody’s around?
“Probably gaming, digging for fresh music, or falling down internet rabbit holes looking for inspiration. I can easily lose track of time for hours.”

Q: What keeps your mind busy besides DJing?
“What drives me most is my relationship, but honestly, my day job too. Music is my absolute passion, but I’ve learned that true growth comes from balancing different parts of life and pushing yourself in all of them.”

More than just DJs. This is us.
