Hello everyone! It’s been awhile since I posted on this account, so I thought I’d do just that with my most recent commission! This morning I was saddened to hear about my very first SCAD animation professor Troy Gustafson’s passing. He was the kind of person who once you met them you never forget. He grew to become a legendary special effects animator at Walt Disney Animation and breathed life and atmosphere into many iconic scenes throughout those films. As a professor he had a tough, no-nonsense attitude and pushed us to be the best we could be, but deep down he had a much softer side that was always willing to make time to help those who were struggling. He told us many stories of his experiences in the animation industry and gave us an idea of the expectations required to be successful. I only had him for one class, but I will never forget the lessons he taught. When our animation classes pitted him and his colleague John Webber against each other in a friendly field day competition, I drew a joke drawing of Troy and Webber duking it out as Pokémon, with Troy being cast as a Typhlosion due to the fun effects that could be done with his iconic beard and hair, being a nod to his SFX background and special knack for animating smoke and fire. It caught on and ‘Troy-phlosion’ became something of an in joke between my classmates and I that year. Troy was a tough as nails cowboy with a heart of gold, and a man of God first and foremost. I’m sure his soul burns brightly in heaven now becoming one with the smoke and fire he so loved to bring to life every day. We had a DELICIOUS lunch at a small cafe around 3000ft up the volcano, made even more so by the gorgeous sweeping views and beautiful outdoor patio section, complete with a botanical garden. They also had a beautiful coal-fired brick oven where guests sitting outside could actually watch their pizzas being cooked! The botanical garden also happens to be home to a few wild chameleons, one of which was being shown around, and my sister even got in on the fun and let the little cutie walk on her! This little friend (in plush form) is the Nene Goose, Hawaii’s state bird and the most endangered goose in the world. A small population lives around the middle section of the volcano at about 5000-7000 ft (I actually caught a glimpse of one flying over a hill!! :3). Continuing from the last batch, here are some pics from the very top of Haleakala! It was a crystal clear day up at the top so the views were excellent, albeit a bit chilly! The plant in the first slide is called a silver sword, and this volcano is the only place in the world where it grows. On the second slide you can see Maunaloa, the Big Island’s tallest volcano jutting up from the distant clouds. Slide 4 features the inside of the volcano’s crater, featuring large lava cones constructed by ash and soot over hundreds of years. These are just some of the amazing sights you can see around and near the top of Haleakala, Maui’s biggest (thankfully dormant for another half century) volcano. Those rolling hills toward where you start the climb up are something I would never expect from Hawaii of all places. Also the view of Kihei bay from 7000 ft is top notch.
