Innovation isn’t just about being new. It’s about being necessary. It’s about building infrastructure that matches the legendary culture we come from. It’s about championing Black women in music without asking them to compromise, dim their light, or prove their worth.💫This nomination honours my late grandmother Maidie and all the Black women in Scotia who’ve been told she’s “too much” or “not enough.” Every voice we’ve amplified. Every legacy we’re protecting. Every artist building their career on their own terms.We’re honoured. We’re grateful. So meaningful to be presented this INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT AWARD 🏆 from my community. 🫶🏽Thank you so much to ANSMA for this recognition. 🙏🏽As I said in my speech huge thanks and gratitude to my Dad (who was my +1 for the evening 🥰) who instilled in me the importance and power of community, the importance of mentorship, and how crucial it is as you climb the ladder of success to always bring people with you. He did that not only by talking about it but leading by example and he demonstrated that sometimes as 1st’s we have to kick down the door but we also have to hold it open so others from our community can come thru. S/O Tara Taylor who’s been instrumental in my mentorship endeavors, Delvina Bernard who’s been a mentor of mine since before I was in music, and godma Lynn Jones who helped me find my voice which now allows me to be an advocate for artists. @keziahmyers and her tireless and unending support through @advancemusicca for recognizing what we have going on here in Scotia. 🫶🏽Last but not least there would be no music industry without the artists. I’ve worked with a lotta artists down home but to those I work with more closely: @reenysmith@haliey.smith @zamanifolade @jody.upshaw @kxngwooz @maggiedandrew thank you for trusting me with your art 🙏🏽🫶🏽. There’s not a lot of us in decision making roles in the music industry. Even fewer African Nova Scotians and I can count on one hand the African Nova Scotian women. There needs to be more of us. @mizzmicah @vitamindee.ent @shevyprice and Kayla Borden keep doing what you’re doing. ✨ I look forward to witnessing all the amazing things you’re creating, the greatness you’re building and handing this off to you ✨🫶🏽🏆. 1. When these nominations were announced I was speechless. To be nominated among such titans in the music industry felt like a win on its own. 💫 But last night when they called my name I legit had no words. HUGE thanks to the individual(s) who championed this and put my name forth in the CAREER ACHIEVEMENT HONORS category. ✨ I can’t fully express how meaningful this is to be recognized for my contributions. Sometimes you do all the things and don’t get the recognition or credit earned. As women and especially as women of color we are often underestimated and consistently expected to prove our value and our worth. But last night was a moment! ⚡️THANK YOU to everyone who holla’d when they called my name. 🙏🏽THANK YOU to everyone who reached out with a kind word. 🙏🏽THANK YOU to everyone who’s inspired me with their mentorship and leadership. 🙏🏽THANK YOU to everyone who believed in me AND to those who didn’t (it’s a reminder of how important is it to go where you’re celebrated). 🙏🏽THANK YOU @womeninmusiccanada for this amazing honour 🏆 and for EVERYONE who showed up to celebrate all the amazing nominees. Tag an African Nova Scotian woman who’s showing up and give her her flowers. 💐 When I think about what it means to be an INDUSTRY BUILDER I think about:🖤 Women who built before me, like my grandmother Maidie who was a pillar in the community & the church. Who made playing an instrument non negotiable in our family. 👑 My dad, who taught me that building community means always bringing people with you.🖤Women carrying the industry now like Delvina Bernard sitting in rooms and on boards (often the only Black woman there) advocating for us.👑The next gen who are building community in powerful ways like @mizzmicah @itsvitamin.dee @shevyprice . Who deserve to inherit an industry that recognizes their brilliance earlier, more fully, and more honestly.🖤 Musicians who shaped culture and didn’t always receive the global & national recognition they deserved in their careers like #TheGospelHeirs 👑 Black women artists who paved the way for us from Portia White to Four the Moment to @giselle_shyluv_cunningham #shyluvI’m honoured to receive this award because I stand on the shoulders of ALL OF THEM. Of ALL of the Black women who did the work before me. 🧱Who kicked down doors 🚪 and held them open so I can do what I do with the PHENOMENAL Black women artists who ride with me⚡️@reenysmith and @haliey.smith, my cousins and ride or dies @jody.upshaw @maggiedandrew @zamanifolade as well as artists like @jupiterreignmusic @quoiastates @adinafraser because if you’ve come to a @maidiemusichouse session and believed in the MMH vision, you’re in the MMH family now. 🫶🏽There’s women out there doing the work right now who we don’t CELEBRATE enough because so much of what Black women BUILD remains invisible labour.They build this industry 💰 Without funding 🏆 Without recognition 🪫 and often without restIf there’s one thing other Black women have shown me it’s that being an INDUSTRY BUILDER is showing up over & over again whether anyone applauds or not. Quick vid of our time in Paris 🇫🇷 as part of the @advancemusicca @ontariocreates Black Music delegation. Attended @mamamusicandconvention , met some innovative creatives and execs. Visited some phenomenal art spaces and discovered the city funds 70% of their space!! 🤯 Spaces we checked out were so expansive with multiple studios and rehearsal and performance spaces like @laplacehiphop and @artistic_palace_paris.Paris is doing some cool things in music.
