Sometimes stepping away from the studio is part of the process too.

I spent two nights alone, surrounded by nature and with very little distraction. There was something about the isolation the quiet, the space and being completely on my own that gave me the chance to slow down and really look.

To notice the light, the colours, the textures, the movement and the small details that are so easy to miss when life is busy.

I’m heading back to the studio now, feeling restored and ready to get stuck into the work for the Sydney Affordable Art Fair.

I’m excited to see what these two days might bring to this next body of work. And before I forget, I’m starting a contact list for anyone who wants to receive notifications of upcoming exhibitions or new releases. DM me your email and I’ll place you on the list. by @katrinabbenson

A huge thank you to everyone who came to the Affordable Art Fair Melbourne over the past four days.

It was extraordinary to see such huge crowds coming through the doors of the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building, and so heartening to see just how many people came out to support the arts.

And to everyone who purchased an artwork, thank you.

There is something incredibly special about owning an original artwork. It becomes part of your home, your life and your story in a way that is very different from owning a print. But more importantly, when you purchase an original work, you are directly supporting an artist and making it possible for them to continue doing what they do.

Every person who lives with an original artwork is, in their own small way, part of the art culture of Melbourne and Australia. You aren’t just buying a painting, you’re contributing to the culture that allows artists to keep making work.

And for those who weren’t in a position to purchase this time, your support matters too. Coming to the fair, stopping to look, talking to artists, asking questions, telling us what you love about our work and simply engaging with what we do is incredibly valuable. Artists need an audience as much as they need collectors.

So thank you to everyone who came, looked, talked, encouraged, shared and collected. Your support is vital.

And a huge congratulations to all the artists and exhibitors. The calibre of work across the fair was exceptional, and it was a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and diverse celebration of contemporary art in Australia.

Introducing our next team member and artist, Katrina Benson! Katrina joined Gallery Swan in Brisbane and is ready to back it up with another stellar showing in Melbourne.

Katrina’s abstract oil paintings focus on process, exploring the application of paint and colour through experimentation and a considered studio practice. Rather than beginning with a particular subject, she works intuitively, responding to initial marks and allowing subsequent layers, shapes and colours to influence the direction of the painting.

Drawing inspiration from her immediate surroundings, including the built environment and landscape of Melbourne, Katrina’s work explores colour, balance, rhythm and the relationships that develop between shapes and forms.

“I’m interested in creating a sense of ambiguity, where suggestions of place and atmosphere emerge without being too defined.”

Katrina has been painting for many years, with her first exhibition held in 1998. Alongside her art practice, she has maintained a teaching career spanning more than 20 years. Her current practice is focused on abstract oil paintings on linen, with a continued interest in colour, experimentation and the possibilities that emerge through the process of painting. taken in Swan Street Artist Studios by @katrinabbenson
