As I celebrate this milestone of 1000 followers, I’m excited to share my story and the passions that drive my journey. Hi, I’m Kathryn Byrd, or Kat - a military brat turned Florida girl living life to the fullest with my husband and our three fur babies who bring immense joy and chaos into our lives. Throughout my academic pursuits, from UWF where I earned my degree in exercise science (Go Argos!), to FAMU for grad school (Go Rattlers!), I’ve been fortunate to apply my skills in diverse healthcare settings. After six incredible years in outpatient pediatrics, I’ve found my true calling and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. My personal journey with ADHD has taught me that neurodivergence is not just a challenge, but a unique strength - our brains are wired differently, and that’s what enables us to connect and empathize in remarkable ways. This perspective allows me to offer authentic support to my patients who share similar experiences. My passion for Occupational Therapy is unmatched, and I thrive on the profession’s versatility, independence, and creativity and the skill that I can turn any object/item into a fun, adaptable, therapeutic activity! I’m passionate about all things sensory, crafting, obstacle coarses, games, low-prep activities I can make, co-treatments with other therapists, and buying new games for my patients! As a fieldwork educator and supervisor for numerous Master’s and OTD students, I find fulfillment in guiding them as they grow into confident professionals, ready to make a meaningful difference! So if you like me and my content, like, comment, share, and follow along on my own personal creative outlet journey into content creation with celebrating all my wins for my little patients! by @katscreativecorner_
🎨 DRAW SOME: One Game, Multiple OT Challenges! ✏️ Who knew a simple drawing game could target SO many developmental skills?! 🙌 This fun, play-based activity can be graded from 1 to 4 cards to challenge kiddos at different skill levels while sparking creativity and imagination! 🎨✨ 🖍️ Visual Motor Integration: Coordinating what the eyes see with controlled hand movements to recreate drawings. 🧠 Visual Perceptual Skills: Targeting visual discrimination, spatial relationships, visual closure, and attention to detail. 👀 Visual Attention & Scanning: Identifying important details and figuring out how different images fit together. ✏️ Fine Motor Control: Strengthening pencil control, grasp stability, and precision while drawing. 🧩 Executive Functioning: Challenging planning, organization, problem-solving, working memory, and cognitive flexibility as more cards are added. 💡 Creativity & Imagination: Encouraging kiddos to think outside the box, combine unexpected ideas, and create their own unique masterpieces! There’s no perfect way to draw, which makes every creation different and FUN! 🎯 Grade the Challenge: Start with one card and work your way up to four to increase visual complexity and cognitive demands! 👥 Make It a Partner Game! Have one player draw while the other tries to guess what’s being created! This adds opportunities to work on social interaction, turn-taking, communication, perspective-taking, flexible thinking, and problem-solving! Switch roles so everyone gets a chance to draw and guess! 😂 And the BEST part?! THE LAUGHS! Some of the drawings turn out absolutely hilarious, especially when combining multiple cards! It’s so much fun seeing what kiddos come up with, hearing their creative explanations, and watching everyone try to guess what they’ve drawn! The sillier the drawing, the bigger the laughs! 🤣 ✨ One game. Multiple ways to play. Endless creativity, LOTS of laughter, and SO many developmental skills being targeted without kiddos even realizing they’re working! 💜 Follow @Katscreativecorner_ for more creative, low-prep pediatric OT activities that turn PLAY into PROGRESS! by @katscreativecorner_
🕷️🕸️ Little Spiders, BIG OT Skills! 🕸️🕷️ Who knew a few plastic spiders and a spider web could create SO many opportunities for skill-building through PLAY?! With one simple setup, we created multiple challenges targeting: 🕷️ Fine Motor Strength: Building finger strength and control through pushing, flicking, pinching, and grasping. 🤲 Bilateral Coordination: Encouraging both hands to work together during double spider challenges. 👆 Finger Isolation: Practicing independent index finger movements for improved dexterity and control. 🎯 Eye-Hand Coordination: Coordinating visual input with hand movements to launch, toss, and place spiders accurately. 🧠 Motor Planning: Planning, organizing, and executing movements to complete each challenge. 💪 Graded Force: Learning how much pressure or force is needed to move spiders toward different targets. 🤏 Fine Motor Precision: Using controlled finger movements to pinch and hang spiders on the web. ✨ One setup, multiple challenges, and endless ways to grade the difficulty up or down! Because in pediatric OT, even the simplest activities can build BIG skills! 📌 SAVE this idea for your next therapy session! 🕷️ FOLLOW @Katscreativecorner_ for more creative, low-prep pediatric OT activities that turn PLAY into PROGRESS! by @katscreativecorner_
🧙‍♀️🧪 HOCUS POCUS… LET’S MAKE SOME POTIONS! 🎃💀 No recipes. No right or wrong combinations. Just a cauldron full of spooky ingredients and ENDLESS possibilities! 👻✨ For this Halloween-inspired OT activity, I filled a cauldron with all kinds of creepy, colorful ingredients and let the kids take the lead! They got to mix, match, explore, and choose their own ingredients to create one-of-a-kind magical potions! 🕷️👀 And while they were busy brewing up their spooky creations, they were working on SO many developmental skills! 💀 Fine Motor Coordination: Picking up, manipulating, and releasing ingredients of different shapes and sizes. 👀 Visual Scanning & Discrimination: Searching through the cauldron to find their desired ingredients. ✋ Grasp & Dexterity: Using different grasp patterns to manipulate small objects. 🧠 Executive Functioning: Making decisions, planning their creations, sequencing ingredients, and problem-solving. 🎃 Bilateral Coordination: Stabilizing potion bottles with one hand while adding ingredients with the other. 🧪 Visual Motor Integration: Coordinating hand movements with visual input to place ingredients into small bottle openings. ✨ Creativity & Imaginative Play: Mixing and matching ingredients, experimenting with combinations, and creating their own magical potions! 🗣️ Self-Expression: Encouraging kids to name their potions and explain what magical powers they have! 🧡 WHY I LOVE OPEN-ENDED, CHILD-LED PLAY! Sometimes the BEST therapy activities are the ones where we step back and let kids take the lead! Giving children the freedom to make choices, explore different possibilities, and create something entirely their own helps support independence, confidence, creativity, and flexible thinking! ✨ No perfect recipe. ✨ No specific end result. ✨ No two potions alike! Just meaningful, play-based learning with a SPOOKY twist! 🎃 📌 SAVE this low-prep Halloween OT activity! 👻 FOLLOW @Katscreativecorner_ for more creative, low-prep pediatric OT activities that turn PLAY into PROGRESS! #PediatricOT #OccupationalTherapy #HalloweenOT #PotionMaking #FineMotorSkills by @katscreativecorner_
💀🎃 STACK ’EM IF YOU DARE! 🎃💀 Who knew a few pumpkin cups and skeleton hands could turn into such a SPOOKTACULAR OT challenge?! 👻 We took traditional cup stacking and added a spooky twist by using skeleton hand grabbers to pick up, move, and stack cups into a tower! But there’s SO much more happening than just stacking cups! 👀 🎃 Grasp & Release: Controlling the grabbers to pick up and let go of cups. 💀 Bilateral Coordination: Coordinating both hands together to manipulate and position cups. 👀 Visual Motor Integration: Using visual information to guide accurate cup placement. ✋ Hand Strength & Dexterity: Activating hand muscles while controlling the grabbers. 🧠 Motor Planning: Figuring out how to position, balance, and stack cups without knocking the tower over. 🎯 Force Grading: Adjusting pressure to maintain a secure grasp without losing control. ✨ The best part? This activity is easy to set up, fun to grade up or down, and uses simple materials! Because in pediatric OT, even the SPOOKIEST activities can build meaningful skills! 🧡 📌 SAVE this Halloween OT idea for later! 👻 FOLLOW @Katscreativecorner_ for more creative, low-prep pediatric OT activities that turn PLAY into PROGRESS! #PediatricOT #OccupationalTherapy #HalloweenOT #FineMotorSkills #BilateralCoordination VisualMotorSkills OTActivities LearningThroughPlay KatsCreativeCorner by @katscreativecorner_

It’s about giving the brain and body the sensory input they need to feel organized, regulated, and ready to participate.
