Hey everyone 🙋🏻‍♀️, I’m Catherine, 30 years old! I was born and raised in Mauritius 🇲🇺 🏝️

In 2015, I moved to China 🇨🇳 for my undergrad studies after getting a scholarship from an international university. My first year was hard juggling with culture shock, a new environment, a new lifestyle, language barrier & an LDR with my ex 😩

Back in December 2017, I flew to South Korea 🇰🇷 for a week since I was obsessed with Korean cosmetics 🧴
This is what triggered my desire to see more of what this world has to offer 🌏

I graduated in 2018 👩🏻‍🎓and by then, fell in love with China and the thrill of living abroad ❤️ After 6 months spent home, I got a teaching job in another city & some months later, I was back in China working , saving & travelling as much as possible 💃✈️

I made it to Taiwan 🇹🇼 in January 2020 until the 😷 pandemic ruined my dream of touring other Asian countries and forced me to explore more of China. Travelling during covid wasn’t easy peasy, but yet I managed to visit places I never thought existed there 🗺️

Living in China under covid zero policy was no joke that it took a toll on my mental and physical health. I was incredibly burnt out, felt isolated and didn’t feel like I was progressing career wise as well 😔

I went on an unexpected solo trip to Thailand 🇹🇭 as soon as China opened borders in January 2023 and promised myself there to change my life & environment .

I moved back to Mauritius in August 2023 and never felt so relieved 🙏 Life has been a rollercoaster 🎢 since, but I’m gradually embracing my healing journey ❤️‍🩹

I hope that my travel photography inspires you to pick up a camera & capture more of the world 📸 I hope that uncovering places in China, Thailand & Mauritius 🏝️ will also inspire you to book your next trip ✈️

If you’re visiting Mauritius during Mid-autumn Festival, usually around the end of September, the Chinatown Food & Cultural Festival is a must 🪭🥮🍜🥟

This festival is hosted annually by The Chinese Chamber of Commerce to promote Chinese culinary heritage and cultural arts 🐲

Streets of Chinatown in the capital are filled with food stalls offering Sino-Mauritian favorites and authentic Chinese dishes and treats 🍜

Popular favorites in Mauritius are fried rice, fried noodles, roasted egg, fried wontons, dumplings & roasted pork. 🥟

You’ll also catch dragon & lion dances, wushu performances, traditional dances & calligraphy demonstrations 🀄️

This festival highlights the deep contribution of Chinese-Mauritians to our island’s multicultural identity 🪭🧧

I love street photography! It reminds me of my humble beginnings as a photographer out in the streets of Hangzhou on Saturdays, walking around with my camera to shoot 📸

P.S: These photos are shared purely from an artistic and documentary photography perspective. They’re meant to capture authentic moments and that day’s atmosphere with no intention to offend anyone 🫶🏼

Looking for an affordable stay by the beach with breakfast & dinner included in Mauritius? 🌊🏝️☀️

I spent my birthday weekend at Ocean Villa in the north of the island and loved it! We were offered a platter of fresh fruits as welcome gift 🍍🍉

Staff were friendly and welcoming. The whole vibe is peaceful & relaxing 😌

Breakfast & dinner are buffet style with a variety of foods for everyone. They also have an onsite spa if you fancy massages. 💆

We paid Rs 12,700 for 2 nights (£238, $267) there in August. Please note that it is low season in Mauritius. The hotel had very few guests.

🍽️ The popular restaurant Beach kitchen is also operated by them and has happy hour and events with live music or a DJ if you want to have some fun.

🚗 Mont Choisy & Grand Baie La Croisette Malls are a 10 minute ride away by car from the hotel.

Been breaking that generational trauma the past years 👀

Growing up in Mauritius, especially as the first child, the elder daughter, you’re unconsciously indoctrinated with the good girl syndrome.

Since childhood, you’re told that you should have good grades so that you can go to university & make your way to a career in the Government sector or a prestigious profession which is meant to be secure & set you up for life.

Without a second thought, you’re out there people pleasing, suppressing your own emotions & desires to avoid conflict & prioritise other’s feelings & thoughts, having to always be the well-behaved girl in family gatherings with your self-worth often tied to external achievements.

Moving abroad, meeting new people, living in a completely different society & picking up new hobbies taught me that everyone has their own definition of success. Discovering skills I didn’t know I had & picking up new interests in a different environment are truly what changed my perspective on life. Making choices which resonated with what I wanted in life became a norm.

At the end of the day, whatever you choose, make sure to stand firm to it & not let people & setbacks keep you away from your goals 🙏 You’re worth it 🫶🏼

I’ve long taken for granted living in Mauritius.

Years ago, I craved for that big city dynamic life in China. It was constant adrenaline rush, chasing adventure, catching trains and flights, living life at the speed of light ⚡️

I moved to Mauritius 3 years ago with no back up plans, but the desire to be in a place with a slow pace environment with a low cortisol lifestyle. Adjusting to island life after so many years abroad hasn’t been easy, but my heart is grateful. Turning 31 by the beach this year is all I ever wanted ❤️

On another note, I was blessed with the sun on my last day in the north! I missed self- shooting photos on early mornings 📸 I used to be an early bird when traveling in Asia. I promise you always get your shots before the crowds turn up 🤭

Some days, I forget that I live in Mauritius 🫶🏼

Your journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be valid 🙏

There is no perfect camera to begin with, no perfect age, no perfect level of knowledge, and no single “correct” path in photography.

Some people start with expensive gear and technical knowledge; others start with whatever camera or phone they have and simply begin noticing things differently.

What matters far more than how you start is how consistently you keep looking, learning, experimenting, and creating.

Your eye keeps developing. Your taste changes. You make photographs you love, then photographs you dislike, then suddenly you look back months later and realize just how much you’ve grown.

So don’t let comparisons convince you that you’re behind. Don’t let gear convince you that you’re not ready. Don’t wait until you feel like a “real photographer.”

You become one by photographing.

Stay dedicated to the art, it will naturally take you further than you can probably see right now ❤️

In Mauritius, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated every year by the Mauritian-Chinese community.

Cultural teams paddle long, slender boats 🛶 adorned with dragon heads and tails, synchronizing their strokes to the beat of drums 🥁

This custom originates from the legend of villagers racing across the water in an attempt to rescue the poet Qu Yuan after he cast himself into the river in China.

Dragon Boat Festival usually falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. 🗓️

The oldest tea plantation in Mauritius 🍃

Pioneers of the Mauritian tea industry, these tea fields are a special mix of history & cultural impact. The Corson Tea Estate, located on the highlands of Curepipe, is where tea seeds from Sri Lanka were first planted for local production in 1886.

🫖 They also introduced the iconic vanilla-flavoured tea, which is still one of the most consumed drinks in many Mauritian households.

🍃 Today Corson products are found in supermarkets and grocery shops in Mauritius. Two of their most popular products are
-Their signature Vanilla tea: black tea infused with natural vanilla aroma
-Golden Pekoe: pure, unflavoured black tea

⚠️ Please note that Corson is more of a small, authentic plantation not catered for mass tourism. The tea fields are a real working environment next to the factory, more local & intimate, covering about 5 hectares.

Happy 58th Independence Day Anniversary 🇲🇺

Three years ago I moved back to Mauritius with 2 suitcases and zero plans after 8 years of living abroad. The first two years adjusting to a slower and very different lifestyle hasn’t always been rainbows & sunshine but nevertheless, I couldn’t be more grateful to be here with my family, reconnecting with old friends & meeting new people 🫶🏼

As they say, you can take the girl out of the island but you can’t take the island out of the girl 🏝️🌊🐚🥭🌅

Happy Chinese New Year 🧧 🏮🎊 🧨

2026 is the year of the Year of the Fire Horse 🐎 symbolising ambition, growth, motivation , confidence & power 💪🏼 In Chinese zodiac, the horse years favors decisive action & independence.

The horse sprints, it doesn’t stop! No wonder why 马到成功 - ma dao cheng gong is the most common wish this year!

While 3% of the population in Mauritian are of Chinese origin, mostly from Guangdong province in southern China, Chinese culture is widely appreciated by Mauritians 😃 Every year, people wait for the annual dragon dance show to celebrate CNY 🐉🧨

P.S It was a mission to get these shots today 😅 It was a bright hot sunny day, the mall was packed and I had to constantly make my way through the crowds, but I’m happy about how they turned out 🫶🏼

Le Morne Village is much more than just a getaway to its famous mountain 👀

Unlike more commercialised tourist hubs, the village has maintained the feel of a traditional Mauritian fishing village 💙

Kids playing by the beach and on the jetty, locals having a chat under the filao trees, boats anchored near the coast and fishermen getting ready for the catch of the day 🎣 converge authentically.

Coastal life in Mauritius isn’t always about luxurious soft life , but often moments at places like this which remind you that life is also about slowing down & appreciating what’s around you 😌
